Update from the SAP on reopening of the Vanoise Express
08/08/2008
The first of the four new cables that will carry the Vanoise Express cable car, connecting the two halves of the Paradiski area (Savoie), were delivered on Friday the 20th June 2008.
Work fitting and adjusting the tension of the first cable started on the 2nd of July. The operation will be carried out at the same time as the existing cables are removed. A second cable will be fitted in the same way at the end of July, followed by the third in August with the final cable being installed in September.
Installation of the four new cables should be completed by mid-October, leaving the rest of the autumn for tests in preparation for the re-opening of the Vanoise Express.
Each load-bearing cable is more than 1.8 kilometres long, 7.5 cm in diameter and weighs 30 kg per metre, making a total weight of over 55 tonnes. The cables will be spooled out from the Peisey station (elevation 1,612 m) to the station at Les Coches (1548 m) and will span a distance of 1,824 metres.
Work is on schedule for the Vanoise Express to re-open on the 20th December. A website has been established to keep visitors up-to-date on the project’s progress and to provide the latest news.
