Val d’Isère is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded ski resorts in France and as well as having been the setting of the prestigious Men’s Olympic Downhill Competition in 1992, it recently hosted the World Alpine Ski Championships in February 2009. Once an 11th Century farming village, it first opened its doors to skiers in 1934. The resort has long since grown and now there are three contrasting villages: the town centre of Val Village; the ‘futuristic’ La Daille; and the sleepy hamlet of Le Fornet.
