Overview

Surprisingly, one cannot help to feel that Nassfeld seems to go under the radar outside of Austria when it comes to recognising top ski resort destinations. This is an absolutely fantastic ski resort that is perfect for the family and snowsports enthusiast. Located in the Sun Ski World area, at the border with both Italy and Slovenia in the Carinthia region of the Austrian Alps, one of Nassfelds unique offerings is how it is able to blend the Austrian and Italian Alpine experience to produce a fantastic ski holiday atmosphere. Its proximity to the Italian border allows Nassfeld to benefit greatly not only from its cuisine but from its climate. The resort receives a great deal of sunshine over the season, with over 100 sunny days every season; thus earning it the nickname the “sun terrace of the Alps' '. Sitting at a height of only 600 metres altitude, Nassfeld’s pistes climb heights of up to 2,200 metres and cover 110 kilometres of marked pistes. There is a great nursery area for beginners but intermediate skiers will have the most fun thanks to the many blue and red runs across the resort. Expert and advanced level skiers have a few blacks to tackle and several off-piste opportunities to explore. It has also added one of the longest gondolas to its left network; the Millenium-Express gondola. If you are visiting with the family, there are 4 different children's dedicated ski areas with practice lifts and magic carpets. Nassfeld also has a fantastic childcare setup with Bobo Children’s land which organises a lot of activities to keep children very well occupied. Overall, Nassfeld is a fantastic choice to visit for a ski holiday getaway, especially with the family. It has also been recently recognised as a top ten ski resort destination in Austria. It is very well rounded in all its offerings from its accommodation ( which is conveniently close to the lifts ), childcare and children's entertainment, fantastic pistes and snow conditions and quality spas and wellness centres. Whilst it may not be a recognised apres-ski haunt, it does have a multitude of mountain and umbrella huts on the slopes, all of which serves fantastic beverages and meals.

Skiing in Nassfeld

The ski area at Nassfeld is made up of a majority of reds and blues which are perfect for intermediates and confident beginners, but overall just about all ski ability levels can find something at the slopes here. The ski terrain is mostly long and cruisy with a number of tree-lined slopes in the Troegl ski area and amazing cliff runs in the Troghoehe ski area.

Beginners should head over to the nursery slopes at Tressdorfer Alm above the main gondola as well as at Sonnenalpe. There are a couple more blues suited for confident beginners at the resort at Watschinger Alm.

Intermediates will love the Carnia run; a 7.6 kilometre run down to Tröpolach from the Zweikofel gondola. More thrilling runs can be found in Gartnerkofel and Watschiger Alm, providing a variety of challenging slopes for intermediates. Easier blue runs can be found running down to Sonnenalpe from the top of the Millennium-Express gondola.

Advanced skiers should head for the black run at Trogkofelbfahrt. There are not that many other challenging blacks to found here as most of the challenging runs are graded as reds. There are still a number of off-piste opportunities to explore with the surrounding mountains having fantastic powder. Check out the Lesachtal Valley for untouched powder, but please take a local guide.

Freeirders love Nassfeld thanks to the “Schneeloch” ski area; a dedicated terrain with deep snow hills and lots of powder and marked and designated for free riders. There are also fantastic off-piste opportunities that abound.

Apres Ski in Nassfeld

Apres-ski

Nassfeld is commonly referred to as the Alp's biggest sun terrace. This is largely due to the sheer amount of mountain and umbrella huts on the slopes; with the sundecks said to number over 1,000. Mountain huts occupy the general apres-ski scene at Nassfeld and also capture the quintessential apres-ski definition of partying on the slopes. After all, what is a much better way to cap off a great day out on the slopes than a refreshing drink on a sun terrace overlooking the breathtaking views of the mountain range. We have put a list together of some of Nassfeld’s vibrant apres-ski spots.

Barenhütte

The Barenhutte is Nassfeld’s number one apres-ski bar and party attraction. Located at the foot of the slopes and next to the Millenium Express valley station, its vibrant atmosphere creates a huge draw often making it the focal point of the night scene at the resort. A traditional style Alpine bar with rustic wooden features and a large sun terrace, the Barenhütte is the ideal spot for a drink and a meal after ( or during ) your ski session. It's great for large gatherings as it is a large venue and accommodates large numbers at once. Open from 12 noon every day, the restaurant serves tasty and hearty meals until 8 pm while the bar stays open until 10 pm. The weekends often feature parties and see’s a larger crowd attendance making it the liveliest time at the Barenhütte.

Zum Alois

Located close to the Millenium Express gondola station, Zum Alois is a restaurant/pizzeria which is open every day and serves delicious meals including, pub classics like burgers, sandwiches and salads and tasty pizzas. It's a popular stopover for food during the day with skiers flocking down for midday meals. After the meals are done, however, Zum Alois transforms into an apres-ski bar with the DJ kicking off the music to signal the start of the apres-ski and party evening. The party kicks on until early hours with disco and club music fuelling the night. Lots of drinks, table dancing and the typical apres-ski fun!

BergHEX

Not exactly an apres-ski spot but the prospect of having a drink at 1,900 metres altitude with a cracking view should be thrilling enough to stop by the Berghex bar. Featuring a panoramic 360-degree view of the snow-covered peaks, no other spot in Nassfeld offers a better view where you can enjoy a meal and a drink. Fantastic spot to get a bit of sunshine, during the day, the Berghex has a chilled out atmosphere and very friendly staff. Worth grabbing a few drinks here before heading to the main resort centre.

Hotel Bars

Apart from the mountain and umbrella huts, check out the bars in the Hotels Al Gallo Forcello and Sonnenalpe for some evening drinks and a fantastic atmosphere. They often have live music and DJ sets on some evenings as well. For a livelier atmosphere, head over to Hermagor to access more bars.
