As such, we are well placed to bring you all the details and information needed to help you make an informed choice on your ski holiday.

The ski resort of Meribel is actually the vision and brainchild of British soldier Peter Lindsay who along with the help of French skier Emile Allais, came across Meribel somewhere between late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Convinced that this was the ideal location, Lindsay started to buy land from the locals and began to realise his dream resort. It is said that the name Meribel originates from the Latin words “Mirare” which means “to look at” and “Bel” which means “beauty”. After the first chalets were built, the first lift was built in 1938 and it took skiers up to 1900 meters. The coming of the war halted any progress but once over, Peter Lindsay returned and resumed his vision. He envisioned a high altitude residential resort which was integrated with the natural environment; and as such, this was the beginning of the building code which can still be seen in the chalets and buildings of Meribel until this day. The code advised that all buildings were to be built with the local materials of stone, slate and wood. Thus to this day at Meribel, the buildings still carry this theme, fortunately, as the alpine spirit of the region is preserved.

And in keeping with tradition, our suggested accommodations below, whether hotel, apartment or chalet accommodation, you are bound to experience a hint of the charismatic Savoyard theme.

Ski Chalets in Meribel

If you are after that quintessential ski holiday feeling, then it probably wouldn't feel all together complete if you have not booked a chalet in for your holiday to Meribel. Traditional wood beams, thick stone walls with roaring fireplaces carved out of some, large bay windows, dark wood floors indoors - stone terraces outside and jacuzzi or hot tub from where you can watch a sunset.

Alpaca Chalet Meribel

Alpaca Chalet in Meribel is truly spectacular and nothing short of stunning. Completed in 2017, this chalet was given a World Ski Award for the Worlds Best New Chalet in 2017 and has since been one of Meribels most sought after chalets. It is one of the impressive luxury chalets Meribel has to offer.

Brace yourself for this. It has 6 bedrooms and sleeps up to 14 guests. The exterior is made up of the Savoyard stone and wood with the interior having less stone but the wooden theme is maintained throughout. Lou Traves is a more modest option to luxury chalet accommodation however, it still very much has all the perks in delivering the quintessential chalet experience. Located in Mussillon district of Meribel, the views from the chalet are absolutely stunning and can be further enjoyed from an outdoor jacuzzi on the terrace. On the inside, what better way to ease the body after a long day on the slopes than a stint in the steam room and sauna located on the ground floor next to the ski equipment and heating boot room. The living room and dining room are an open plan cosy space on the first floor which opens up to a large balcony and more amazing views. The chalet kitchen is fully equipped with up to standard self catering appliances. In comparison to the other chalets previously discussed, Marielaine Chalet has only 3 bedrooms and sleeps up to only 7 guests. Also on the ground floor in an adjoining room is a modest kitchen complete with appliances and utensils needed for self catering. Interestingly, Marielaine Chalet is one of the new ‘contactless’ catered chalet Meribel can boast of. Contactless catering is a catered system where food is prepared and delivered to the house when guests are out on the slopes and there is no physical contact with the caterers; food is prepared remotely and delivered, wine racks are refilled and the fridge and other items are restocked. Marielaine Chalet has 1 double bedroom ensuite with showe and wc, 1 twin bedroom en suite and 1 bedroom with 2 single beds and 1 small double bed on a mezzanine plus en suite. There is also a ski room with heated boot dryers and laundry on the ground floor.

Ski Apartments in Meribel

For smaller travelling groups or smaller families seeking privacy and relaxation at a reasonable price, apartments would be the favorable option.

Self catering apartments in Méribel in particular are a special case amongst other ski resorts in French as Meribel deviated away from the trend of concrete apartment buildings in the 1960’s that was the order of the day at other resorts. This was only possible as a result of Peter Lindsay, the resort's founder who was insistent that buildings in the 3 valley area must adhere to a chalet style design built in the traditional fashion of stone and wood. It was not until the 1980’s that larger chalet style apartments were starting to be constructed once again in the resort.

Apartments in Meribel can be found in different sizes and cater to different groups ranging from romantic couples looking for a studio to get away with some privacy to small families needing an apartment that sleeps up to 6 or 7.

The interior has a very neat finish of bright colours and quality wood throughout the apartment. It is perfect for a traveling family with young kids as there are actually two living room areas, so kids can play and have a fun time in one of the living spaces without bothering the parents. The apartment is self catered however, as common with most self catered apartments, private chefs and catering can be arranged. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Ski Hotels in Meribel

In most ski resorts across Europe, chalets and apartments are often the more favorable options when it comes to ski holidays as they offer more privacy, more room as well as flexibility in catering and of course, the added experience of staying in a chalet or chalet styled apartment is usually the cherry on top. However, chalets and apartments are usually rented on a minimum stay of 6 or 7 nights. Hotels, on the other hand, offer a great option for Meribel visitors on a short stay. They are also perfect for small travelling groups who don't want the responsibility of cooking. Often couples on a romantic getaway or friends on a skiing mission.

There is a vast selection of hotels at your disposal at Meribel. We have curated a few below:

Le Grand Coeur & Spa Hotel

Located in the resort center, Le Grand Couer hotel is only the second hotel to be built in Meribel. It has a certified historic connection to this resort and village. The interior is immaculately designed with woodwork, stone walls and finishes and charismatic furniture. The rooms are all decorated to a very high standard, all en suite with stone and granite walls and table tops. A main feature at Le Grand Coeur of course, is its spa. No better way to unwind after vigorous exertions on the slopes than in the sauna or hammam, or getting a massage treatment to ease the muscles. The wellness area features a hammam, sauna, jacuzzi that fits 12, fitness room and a few treatment rooms for booked massage sessions.

The bar and lounge at Le Grand Coeur on an evening is a mix of snug and chic; where you can enjoy a lovely cocktail, piano sounds and crackling fire. In the morning and afternoons, you can enjoy warm drinks as well as a tasty dessert trolley. The restaurant at Le Grand Coeur has excellent reviews; the delicious menu always includes traditional dishes made from local produce where possible. It is well known for its fine dining.

La Chaudanne Hotel, Meribel

La Chaudanne Hotel in Meribel is a 3 star hotel located in the centre of Meribel and only a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants in the resort. The bar and lounge has a great drinks menu, however, as you will be located in the center of Meribel amongst other attractions, the lounge at La Chaudanne could serve as a starting point. Restaurant Le 80 is the resident restaurant at La Chaudanne Hotel. They are open for breakfast and dinner everyday serving local and international dishes.

La Chaudanne also has a Spa which is independently run by Nuxe. There is also a wellness area which includes an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and sports room.
