Overview of Gressoney

Gressoney is located in the heart of the Monterosa ski circuit and is part of the Aosta Valley ski area. Gressoney is comprised of two very charming and welcoming, traditional Italian Alpine villages; Gressoney-La-Trinité and Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Gressoney is the perfect resort for holidaymakers in search of a quiet and peaceful ski retreat. Even though it's a popular snowsports resort, both villages are full of culture and character. The old Walser traditions are still very much on display in the villages as an ode to the area's charismatic history. Gressoney is ideal for a wide range of holidaymakers from families, to romantic couples to snowsports enthusiasts in search of challenging pistes, great snow conditions and un-crowded slopes. Families looking to escape the loud and raucous resorts will find peace here and romantic couples after some alone time will find serenity against a backdrop of some of the Italian Alps most beautiful mountain scenery. Some of the views here are nothing short of stunning as you are granted amazing panoramic views of the Monte Rosa glacier, the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
Advanced skiers seeking thrilling pistes will find exactly what they are looking for in Gressoney. The Monterosa is a fantastic ski circuit that is whispered and believed to be ranked among some of the Alp's best-kept secrets and skiers visiting the resort are granted full access to the area and its awesome pistes. Confident intermediates have the run of the manor at Gressoney with the ski area full of red and black runs. Beginners and young children aren't left out either as the area does have something for everyone. The accommodation here is perfect for everyone visiting the resort, with the majority offering door to door skiing and close proximity to the slopes and lifts. Gressoney St Jean is farthest to the slopes as it sits on the far end of the valley, however, there is an efficient ski shuttle bus that connects skiers from that part of the village to the lifts at the resort's main centre. Gressoney St Jean and Gressoney La Trinite offer a slightly different experience with the latter having a slightly more lively atmosphere and is also located closer to the ski area in Stafal. Gressoney St Jean on the other hand is further away nestled in a sleepy section of the valley and is the quieter of the two. Regardless of where you choose to stay at Gressoney, you will still experience the full beauty and charm of the Aosta Valley.

Skiing in Gressoney

Gressoney offers some of the best skiing not only in the Monte Rosa circuit but in the Aosta Valley. It is a skier's dream with lots of powder and long runs. It features 180 kilometres of some spectacular scenic routes and uncrowded slopes. It has an excellent snow reliability record thanks to its high altitude slopes and its snow conditions remain great thanks to the efficient snowmaking machines. The majority of the runs here are graded red and black and as such cater to advanced and intermediate level skiers.

Apart from the nursery slopes in La Trinite and Stafal where beginners can practise and gain confidence, beginners can head over to the blue Castore run above Stafal at 2,318 metres. The easier, beginner-friendly slopes can be found in other areas of the Aosta Valley like La Thuile. If you are visiting with children, Champoluc and Courmayeur also have fantastic children's areas.

Intermediate skiers will absolutely love the long cruisy reds in Gressoney and the neighbouring valley of Ayas. There are over 35 intermediate runs to choose from across the area; all of which offer spectacular scenic views of the Monte Rosa area.

An advanced skier's dream, Gressoney is often referred to as the haven for Italian off-piste skiing. It has fantastic links to the Alagna which is home to some of the area's most fantastic yet challenging black runs and off-piste skiing. For local off-piste terrain, hop on the Punta Indren gondola for more local opportunities.

Snowboarding in Gressoney

Although there is a large amount of groomed pistes slopes in the area, the main attraction to the Monterosa is its off-piste areas. Gressoney’s large off-piste terrain offers loads of opportunities for free riders and carvers. There are wide open ample spaces for carvers as well as several gullies, big drop-ins and wide-open bowls for free riders. Freeriders will also appreciate the majority of the pistes at Gressoney which are long, open and cruisy. Beginners have the nursery slopes at the resort to practise on.

Snow Conditions in Gressoney

No weather forecast available

The snow reliability in Gressoney and the overall Aosta Valley is excellent thanks to its very high altitudes. In addition to the great altitudes and conditions, up to 90% of the Monte Rosa slopes have been covered from snow making facilities.

Apres Ski in Gressoney

If you are searching for a loud apres ski evening with table dancing and wild parties into the early hours of the day, Gressoney is probably not the ideal resort for that. It is a relaxed and fairly quiet resort that isn't particularly known for its wild parties. Apres-ski evenings, in general, haven't necessarily been a major focus across the small resorts along the Monterosa valley. The general type of evening spots are restaurants where you can have a nice glass ( or bottle) of wine over a lovely dinner. There are also places where you can stop by for an aperitivo, or even a few drinks and some music. We have listed a few places that you may find interesting on your holiday to Gressoney.

Da Giovanni Afterski

Located at the large parking lot in Stafal, Da Giovanni Afterski is a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike, after a day on the slopes. It also doubles as a ski equipment rental - making for an interesting business model of beer and skis! It's friendly and welcoming and a great place to reflect on the day's events on the slopes as it's a bar that is quite popular with ski instructors and mountain guides, so if you get to strike up a conversation, you may stand to learn a thing or two.

Petit Bar

Petit Bar is a lovely small bar located in the heart of Gressoney la Trinite and just a short walk from the old church. It's a charming little enclave run by a local couple. It's not the typical apres-ski bar- in fact, it's quite far from it, however, if you are after a cosy, rustic evening with a few glasses of wine and mountains of romantic ambience, this will be the right place for you. They have a great selection of local beers, wines and they also serve very tasty meals, snacks and coffees. Not open until late, but it is certainly worth the experience if you are after a traditional Italian experience.

Castore Lounge

One of the most popular bars in Gressoney, Castore Lounge is the ideal spot to hang out if you are after your quintessential apres ski evening. Split into 3 different areas; an outside terrace, a modern bar and an elegant restaurant, Castore Lounge has quite a wide offering. A great combination of good music, refined drinks and tasty cuisine, Castore is a welcome sight to the party animals at Gressoney. They have happy hours and sometimes free snacks for their patrons. Although there is always great music playing in the Castore Lounge, look out for Tuesday nights where you can dance until the early hours or Thursday night AfterSki parties with live DJ sets and disco evenings.
