The ski resort of Meribel is actually the vision and brainchild of British soldier Peter Lindsay who along with the help of French skier Emile Allais, came across Meribel somewhere between late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Convinced that this was the ideal location, Lindsay started to buy land from the locals and began to realise his dream resort. It is said that the name Meribel originates from the Latin words “Mirare” which means “to look at” and “Bel” which means “beauty”. After the first chalets were built, the first lift was built in 1938 and it took skiers up to 1900 meters. The coming of the war halted any progress but once over, Peter Lindsay returned and resumed his vision. He envisioned a high altitude residential resort which was integrated with the natural environment; and as such, this was the beginning of the building code which can still be seen in the chalets and buildings of Meribel until this day. The code advised that all buildings were to be built with the local materials of stone, slate and wood. Thus to this day at Meribel, the buildings still carry this theme, fortunately, as the alpine spirit of the region is preserved.

And in keeping with tradition, our suggested accommodations below, whether hotel, apartment or chalet accommodation, you are bound to experience a hint of the charismatic Savoyard theme.

Ski Chalets in Meribel

If you are after that quintessential ski holiday feeling, then it probably wouldn't feel all together complete if you have not booked a chalet in for your holiday to Meribel. Traditional wood beams, thick stone walls with roaring fireplaces carved out of some, large bay windows, dark wood floors indoors - stone terraces outside and jacuzzi or hot tub from where you can watch a sunset.

What to expect

Expect picturesque surroundings, stylish interiors, and a range of amenities, including hot tubs, saunas, and cinema rooms in some luxury options. Some chalets in MĂ©ribel may come with personalized services, catering to families and friends seeking an exclusive and comfortable retreat. Nestled in the heart of the Three Valleys, these chalets provide direct access to one of the world's largest ski areas. With easy access to the slopes and the charming village atmosphere, Meribel's ski chalets provide a perfect blend of indulgence and mountain adventure.

Ski Apartments in Meribel

For smaller travelling groups or smaller families seeking privacy and relaxation at a reasonable price, apartments would be the favourable option.

Self-catering apartments in MĂ©ribel in particular are a special case amongst other ski resorts in France as Meribel deviated away from the trend of concrete apartment buildings in the 1960s that was the order of the day at other resorts. This was only possible as a result of Peter Lindsay, the resort's founder who was insistent that buildings in the 3 Valley area must adhere to a chalet-style design built in the traditional fashion of stone and wood. It was not until the 1980s that larger chalet-style apartments were starting to be constructed once again in the resort.

Apartments in Meribel can be found in different sizes and cater to different groups ranging from romantic couples looking for a studio to get away with some privacy to small families needing an apartment that sleeps up to 6 or 7.

What to expect

Méribel ski apartments are often situated close to the slopes, providing easy access to the renowned skiing and snowboarding terrain. Expect a range of amenities, including well-equipped kitchens for self-catering, comfortable living spaces, and stunning alpine views. Many apartments in Méribel cater to various preferences, from cosy spaces for couples to larger units suitable for families or groups. Additionally, the vibrant village atmosphere, with its après-ski scene and dining options, adds to the appeal of staying in these conveniently located ski apartments.

Ski Hotels in Meribel

In most ski resorts across Europe, chalets and apartments are often the more favorable options when it comes to ski holidays as they offer more privacy, more room as well as flexibility in catering and of course, the added experience of staying in a chalet or chalet styled apartment is usually the cherry on top. However, chalets and apartments are usually rented on a minimum stay of 6 or 7 nights. Hotels, on the other hand, offer a great option for Meribel visitors on a short stay. They are also perfect for small travelling groups who don't want the responsibility of cooking. Often couples on a romantic getaway or friends on a skiing mission.

What to expect

Ski hotels in Meribel offer a blend of Alpine luxury and convenient access to the slopes. Positioned often at the foot of the slopes, these hotels provide ideal gateways to the extensive skiing terrain. Expect a range of accommodations, from luxurious five-star options to modern, ski-in/ski-out hotels featuring amenities such as swimming pools, saunas, and fitness centres. Meribel's ski hotels typically cater to both the avid skier and those seeking relaxation, ensuring a comfortable stay with breathtaking mountain views. Many hotels in the area also provide easy access to après-ski activities and the vibrant atmosphere of the resort village.
