Chamonix Ski Accommodation .
Visiting Chamonix this winter? We have a fantastic selection of Chamonix accommodation options for you regardless of whether you are visiting as a family, a group of friends or a solo traveller. Ski accommodation is perhaps, one of the most important expenditures of your ski holiday and getting it right is not only crucial to the harmony of the entire stay, it also sets the tone of your holiday from day one.
Chamonix was originally a commune of mountain farmers who reared livestock and a little number of oats and rye. ‘Discovered’ in 1741 on an expedition by two English explorers, Windham and Pococke, Chamouny, as it was then known, garnered a buzz across Europe after it was mentioned in Pococke and Windham expedition stories and by 1770, its first guest house was opened by Madame Coutterand. The valley soon became desired holiday destination which began to receive well-known personalities and public figures by the mid-1780s. With the area fast becoming an even bigger attraction, 1816 saw the arrival of The Hotel de l'Union, the first luxury hotel built in the area which was shortly followed by many others in the years to come, thus shifting the economical power from mountain and tour guides to the hotel industry, with several luxury hotels popping up across the valley.
The accommodation landscape across Chamonix has continued to grow and evolve since Madame Coutteran set up shop in the 18th century. As earlier mentioned, the resort of Chamonix and the adjoining villages in the Mont Blanc Valley boasts a lovely selection of hotels, apartments and chalets. All of which cater to a wide profile of skiers visiting the resort. However, regardless of what type of property you choose to stay in, there are a few things to take into consideration before making a selection.
Budget Although known to be relatively pricey, Chamonix is blessed with a variety of accommodation options which allows skiers to choose across a range of budget options. The resort has its fair share of luxury and budget-friendly hotels, chalets and apartments to choose from. Having a clear understanding of your budget allows you to narrow down your accommodations and select the best place to suit your plans. As always, make sure you check out Erna Low’s partner accommodation offers in Chamonix and other resorts across Europe for fantastic prices to suit any budget.
Proximity to the Pistes When visiting the Alps on a ski holiday with family including young children or elderly family members, it always helps a great deal to find accommodation that is close to the slopes. Makes it easier for quick access on and off thus shortening the journey for the family. Chamonix has a small selection of accommodation that offers doorstep skiing so if distance and proximity to the pistes is something you are keen on, you must certainly consider looking out for places that offer door-to-door skiing. Due to their limited availability, these places do often cost a premium. If being close to the pistes isn't a priority for you, the resort has shuttle busses available to ferry skiers across the village including making stops close to some of the lifts.
Distance to Amenities Chamonix is largely pedestrian and car-free so getting around is pretty easy and hassle-free. If you are staying in self-catering accommodation and would like quick and easy access to the shops its best to get somewhere close to the centre. Also, consider the evening walks if you would like to visit a few restaurants whilst visiting the village. It also helps if you are planning to be right in the mix of the apres ski scene. Check out the accommodation options in the centre, close to the Baroque church for example. Chamonix is also a top apres ski destination and the resort does get rowdy in the evenings so look for accommodation further north of the resort if you want to be away from all the noise. There are great price ranges for options within and outside the main village centre. In summary, if you want to be in the midst of all the action you are better off staying in the Chamonix centre. Check out the other villages like Argentière, Les Praz & Les Bois for a much quieter stay.
