Adelboden Ski Resort

Overview of Adelboden

Adelboden is a charming traditional village in the stunningly beautiful western region of Bernese Oberland. It is highly regarded as one of Switzerland's most favoured winter-sports areas and the desired family retreat both in the winter and summer seasons. It was heavily promoted by Sir Henry Lunn as one of the earliest Swiss ski holiday packages as far back as 1903 and it still ranks among its top-rated resorts. It is incredibly scenic, as it is located on a natural terrace overlooking a beautiful valley at 1,353 metres. It has an authentic Alpine village atmosphere which is heavily influenced by its blend of old traditional buildings and modern structures. Most of the village centre is pedestrian and car-free allowing holidaymakers to wander freely through its shops, cafes and restaurants.

VIEW MAP

Together with neighboring Lenk, both resorts share terrain to create the Adelboden-Lenk ski area, which also includes a number of other areas. It includes the vicinity of the Oey slopes, Tschenten-Alp, Silleren-Hahnenmoos-Metsch, and the Hahnenmoos sector, which serves as a snowboarder's paradise. There are 204 kilometers of slopes in the resort, with elevations ranging from 1,260 to 2,362 meters.

The area is not completely interlinked with some areas requiring the local bus service to link skiers. The ski terrain is varied and largely favours beginners and intermediate-level skiers however, there are some notable runs in Adelboden, particularly, the Alpine World Cup slalom & giant slalom run in the Chuenisbargli zone of the Silleren-Hahnenmoos sector. Other challenging runs can be found on Geils and off-piste, powder seekers should look high up on the Hahnenmoos ski area of Adelboden. If you are traveling with the family, it's a fairly straightforward transfer as it's only located approximately 60 minutes from the Swiss capital of Berne.

Skiing in Adelboden

Skiing in Adelboden is a great experience. The ski area is well balanced and although beginners and intermediates have the majority of graded pistes, there are still challenging advanced runs like the Chuenisbargli slopes which welcome the world’s ski elite every year for the Ski World cup slalom and giant slalom. Beginners will find most joy on the Tschenten-Alp in Adelboden and on the Leiterli and Stoss in Lenk with easy flat surfaces for children and novices. There are several reds across the area with the Silleren-Hahnenmoos an ideal location for intermediates. There is a long, blue, home run from Adelboden to Oey that is perfect for confident beginners but intermediates can also get in on the fun.

Freestylers have a fantastic time at Adelboden. Its Gran Masta park is an excellent snowpark perfect for freestylers and it caters to all from beginners to pros. Well equipped with jumps and rails, it is constantly visited by some international snowboard professionals. Freeriders will also enjoy the terrain in the Geils area which offers some of the steepest un-marked slopes and couliers. The Hahnenmoos sector also provides awesome powder fields and there is favourable riding terrain in the beginner area in TschentenAlp, which also has some good powder. Pro and advanced boarders still get to stay busy but beginner boarders will likely be the happiest here.

The nightlife in Adelboden is varied but relatively calm in comparison to other ski resorts in Switzerland. Whilst the majority of the apres-ski vibe in Adelboden mirrors its overall calm and traditional atmosphere, there are still a number of bars where skiers can enjoy a few drinks and experience a party atmosphere. There are also several huts on the slopes where skiers can stop over for a drink and a lovely meal before heading back down to the village for a bit more apres-ski fun. In general, Adelboden is best suited to skiers who prefer a couple of drinks, some laughs and a nice evening meal over wild partying. We have listed a few places you might find interesting.

The Axebar

Located in The Cambrian hotel in heart of the resort, The Axe Bar is a very stylish bar and lounge. Its theme is cleverly centred around an ice axe; a crafty attempt at Alpine symbolism and Alpine living in general. It has a very contemporary and modern interior that still manages to capture an authentic, mountain village experience. A brilliant space for enjoying tasty wholesome meals and drinks, The Axe Bar has an excellent menu and a wide selection of beers and cocktails. More chill-out zone than a pub, it's the perfect place for skiers who are looking to relax after a long day on the slopes.

Time Out Pub

One of the resort's main apres-ski pubs, the Time Out pub is centrally located on Dorfstraße and is one of the most popular meet-up bars in Adelboden. A traditional snow bar, the Time Out is very friendly and welcoming to skiers looking to have an Alpine apres-ski evening of drinks, music and laughs. Time Out is also a fantastic place to have a tasty dinner and catch up on major international sporting events such as football or ice hockey.

Arena Bowling Bar A bit of something different on a night out after a long day on the slopes, Arena Bowling Bar is a restaurant, bar and bowling alley. Perfect for a family evening or a group of friends. The overall atmosphere is very chilled out. Great place for an evening aperitif followed by some classic pub meal classics. Bowlers and non-Bowlers welcome.
