Erna Low's Behind the Scenes Tour of the Eurotunnel
The Erna Low team were recently treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Channel Tunnel. This allowed us as travel advisors to find out a lot more about the services that we offer to our clients. We were taken on a full guided tour of the facility to learn how Eurotunnel operates safely and efficiently, as well as getting to travel on it ourselves over to Calais with all the benefits of Eurotunnel Le Shuttle’s Flexiplus service.
• No baggage restrictions - take as many skis and snowboards as you want!
• Travel at your own pace and avoid busy airport terminals
• Make the most of your holiday by stopping off en-route to explore everything that France has to offer
• Save money – Eurotunnel Le Shuttle offers great value for money, especially for families travelling during the school holidays.
As we were experiencing the Flexiplus travel option on our trip we got to visit the exclusive Flexiplus lounge, where we relaxed with a complimentary coffee and lunch before being the first to board the train. As Flexiplus ticket holders, we were free to travel on whichever train we preferred, so we had the option to stay in the lounge for as long as we wanted. Crossings are frequent, with up to 5 departures an hour at peak times, so there was no rush to get the train that we were initially booked on. As we were first on the train, we were first off and straight on the road over in Calais. On the Calais side of the tunnel we had a guided tour of the site and found out about the way Calais and Folkestone communicate to ensure a safe and efficient journey for the customer as well as being shown all the new security measures the Calais side of the Eurotunnel has implemented to improve the migrant situation.
As you may be aware, the migrant situation in Calais over the past few years has evolved. The UK Government has invested tens of millions of pounds to reinforce border security through infrastructure improvements at the juxtaposed ports, and security at the Calais port and around the Eurotunnel site in Coquelles has improved significantly as a result. Due to the investment in Calais, the amount of migrants attempting to enter the UK through the tunnel has dropped significantly, and there has not been any service disruption due to migrant activity since October 2015. This means as the customer your journey will not be affected at all by the situation in Calais and you will be well on your way to your ski holiday with no hassle as soon as you get off the train.
On our way to board the train we also visited the pet travel lounge where there were dedicated exercise areas for the pets. All the staff are very friendly and fully trained to deal with your furry friends. If you do intend on bringing your pets with you on your holiday Eurotunnel Le Shuttle is a great option with its short crossing time of only 35 minutes as well as having the advantage of your pet staying in the car with you!
From 2006 to 2015 figures have jumped from 7.8 million people taking the Eurotunnel in 2006 to 10.5 million in 2015 which proves that it is a very popular option for people wanting to get to cross the channel over to France. Self-drive ski holidays are Erna Low’s speciality, we know all the best routes, stop-offs and top hotels en-route to the Alps and are always happy to advise you on anything you may need to know for your trip!
Take a look on our website for more information on the Eurotunnel and I hope you’ve been convinced to take Eurotunnel Le Shuttle on your next ski holiday. It was a great day and thanks to Eurotunnel for the great tour and allowing us to experience the Flexiplus travel package that all our clients love!
