[EL_Resort_H1Zermatt]
The charm of Zermatt extends far beyond its slopes, and the village itself is what can only be described as a winter wonderland with its traditional wooden chalets, cobbled streets and an ambience that perfectly balances Alpine tradition with modern luxury. You’ll find world-class restaurants serving everything from hearty Swiss fondues to gourmet cuisine, boutique shops offering high-end fashion and local crafts, and a selection of wellness spas perfect for unwinding after a day on the mountain. In short, you have more than enough to explore! Plus, as a car-free resort, Zermatt also enjoys crisp, unpolluted mountain air, making it a true escape from the chaos of everyday life.
The skiing here is nothing short of spectacular, too. With over 360km of interconnected pistes spanning Switzerland and Italy, it’s one of the best places to explore an almost endless selection of varied terrain. The resort is famed for its breathtaking “pinch-me-this-can’t-be-real” scenery, with the iconic Matterhorn (you might know it better as the Toblerone!) standing sentinel as an awe-inspiring backdrop to every run. Skiers and snowboarders alike can enjoy a mix of well-groomed pistes, challenging off-piste runs and the chance to glide across the border to Cervinia for a ski-and-dine adventure in Italy.
I love Zermatt, the Matterhorn views, the gorgeous cobbled streets and beautiful old buildings in the resort and popping to Italy for lunch make it a firm favourite for me

The resort’s highest lift station, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, sits at a staggering 3,883m, making it the highest in Europe and pretty much guaranteeing excellent snow conditions not just through the winter season, but throughout the entire year. The ski area extends across 360km of slopes, offering a wide variety of fun slopes to play on. Skiers of all levels are spoilt for choice here, as beginners can enjoy wide, well-maintained pistes, while more experienced skiers have the opportunity to attempt the exhilarating black runs and trickier off-piste terrain.

However, the prime ski season runs from December to April, when the entire ski area is open and the snow conditions are at their absolute best. If you prefer fewer crowds and great snow, January and March are both excellent choices. For summer skiing, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise offers slopes even in July and August!
Is Zermatt suitable for beginner skiers?
Absolutely! While Zermatt has a reputation for its advanced and off-piste terrain, it also caters well to beginners. The Sunnegga and Riffelberg areas offer gentle, wide slopes perfect for learning and mastering the basics. Plus, Zermatt has excellent ski schools with experienced instructors who can help you build confidence on the snow.
Can I ski from Zermatt to Italy?
Yes! One of Zermatt’s unique features is its connection to Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy - you can ski across the border and enjoy an Italian lunch before heading back to Switzerland. Just make sure to check the lift status and weather conditions, as high winds can occasionally close the connection.
What’s the après-ski scene like in Zermatt?
Zermatt offers a mix of lively and laid-back après options. If you’re looking for a party atmosphere, Hennu Stall is the place to be with live music and dancing. For a more refined experience, check out Elsie’s Wine and Champagne Bar or one of the many cosy mountain lodges where you can unwind with a drink by the fire.
How do I get to Zermatt?
Zermatt is a car-free village, so you’ll need to take a train from Täsch, where you can park your car. The scenic train ride on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn takes just 12 minutes. If you’re flying, Zurich, Geneva and Milan are the closest major airports, with easy train connections to Zermatt.
Guaranteed snow and glacier skiing make Zermatt a great choice for keen skiers. The link to Cervinia in Italy gives extra terrain to discover too.
