Val Thorens is one of the Alp's most exciting ski resorts and it remains a top destination for snowsport enthusiasts across the globe. Adored for its thrilling, high-altitude, snowsure pistes, Val Thorens also has a plethora of exciting activities to offer off the slopes. Cristal Butcher, Head of Groups at NUCO Travels, shares her expert knowledge on some exciting activities you can get up to off the slopes at Val Thorens!

Overview

Nestled deep in the Tarentaise Valley above the treeline, the mammoth Val Thorens resort offers a multitude of activities for everyone to participate in. Whether you’re travelling with friends, family, on a school trip or even hen/stag do’s, Val Thorens definitely has the capability to offer it all. The infrastructure within the resort is second to none, and will easily let you partake in many magical activities! What’s more, Val Thorens is well known for its contagious and varied nightlife. You’ll never be bored with all bars and clubs it has to offer.

La Bee Zip Line

A great addition to Val Thorens is the La Bee Zip Line which lets you self-service your way through 3 different ziplines across the local valley of Val Thorens. After receiving your brief, get expertly equipped with everything you need and you’re off! Ski’s are attached to your back as you transverse across the valley. If you’re looking for adrenaline, this is definitely the place for you. Once you reach the bottom, you can purchase your mid-flight photos for only 3€! It is one to remember.

Cosmojet Toboggan Run

If ziplining doesn’t take your fancy, the Cosmojet Toboggan run definitely will! Take the Peclet Funitel all the way to the spectacular Peclet glacier. Once you’ve stopped for a moment to take in the impressive views across the valley, you can begin your 45-minute tracked on piste descent. The majority of the track has snow bank walls (to ensure you don’t go off-piste) and pit stops along the way to wait for the rest of your group. We can guarantee you will enjoy every moment of it and will laugh during the entirety of the run. It definitely gets the adrenaline pumping and is a great activity to do with family and friends alike.

Ice Diving in the Mountain Lake, Lac du Lou!

Are you looking for an unbelievable, once-in-a-lifetime experience like no other? Look no further, ice diving in Val Thorens is a very special opportunity to try something new. Begin your day with a snowshoe trek to the glorious Lac du Lou. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll receive a full briefing to ensure you have all equipment and information required in a pleasant rustic refuge by the ice lake. As soon as you’re kitted, you’ll head out to the lake to free-dive between three ice holes. The magical moment underwater will let you enjoy the quiet serenity of the underwater world. The dive is fully supervised and you’ll be attached to ropes to ensure safety and security. After the dive, you’ll return back to the refuge where you can warm up, get changed and return back to Val Thorens by snowshoe hike. This is a truly phenomenal experience and one you’ll remember forever.

Ice Skating

The very popular Val Thorens Ice Rink, known as La Patinoire, first opened in November 2020 and instantly became a huge hit. The 400m2 rink is something that everyone can enjoy and is open daily. It is based in the heart of Val Thorens and outside the free bus route around town. Fun music is playing whilst you ice skate outside in the beautiful mountain winter wonderland and why not enjoy a hot chocolate (or maybe something a little stronger?) afterwards. This great new activity is definitely worth trying!

Paragliding

Paragliding is definitely one activity for the bucket list and not for the faint-hearted. However, once you’ve overcome the initial first glide, you will be rewarded with the spectacular view of the Bellevilles valley and within this, Mont Blanc. You’ll also receive a bird's eye view like none other! Breathe in the stunning mountain air whilst enjoying all of the scenery the mountains have to offer. Of course, the glide will also provide the best selfie to remember for a lifetime.

Apres Ski!

Val Thorens has countless apres and nightlife options available for everyone to choose from and will always tick off your list of what you’re looking for. Why not visit the highest pub in France, the Frog and Roastbeef which provides great food but even better live music and drinks deals during the evening. The not-so-secret Scandanavian weapon, Snesko, will always get you dancing on the tables, whether you think you want to or not. You’ll forget any worries as you’re singing along to every euphoric song played. Finally, Saloon Group. A host of bars along Val Thoren's very own strip has something to offer to everyone. Favela, a 3 story-tiered bar, is Latin American-inspired and turns from restaurant to bar to ensure everyone has a night to remember. Saloon bar, notorious for its happy hours and Joss shots has live DJs every day and is never one to miss. After the eclectic choice of bars, you have the largest club in the Alps, the mighty Malaysia, to delve into. Despite looking like a lovely white garden shed which sells crepes during the day, Malaysia was previously an underground car park which can now hold 1,200 people. Finally, Klub Summit, known as the highest club in Europe, will always be heaving with people nightly due to its guaranteed fantastic DJs (who has played at Tomorrowland Festival), reasonable drinks prices and VIP booths.
