Imagine a family ski holiday for just £246!
We were fascinated by a recent feature on the snowsports blog, Skipedia, which claimed that a family of four can enjoy a week's ski holiday for just £246. This tongue in cheek claim then went on to explain that one requirement would of course be to have access to a time machine to take you back to 1974, where that price was quoted by our founder, Erna Low in her guide to family skiing.
That said, it got us thinking just how cheaply it can be done in this day and age. With a recent Columbus Direct survey claiming that the average price of a family ski holiday is now £4,688, we thought we'd take a look to see what our best value Easter ski holiday would be.
Our best value Easter family ski holiday
|1974 price||2018 price|
|Travel & ski accommodation for 7 nights||£126||£697|
|Ski & boot rental for 2 adults & 2 children||£36||£386|
|6 day ski passes for 2 adults & 2 children||£44||£280|
|Ski lessons for 2 adults & 2 children||£40||£512|
|Total holiday cost||£246||£1,875|
Okay, it's a little more than the incredible price tag of £246, but we still think it's pretty good value and well under half the average price of a ski holiday, according to the report.
The above price for this winter includes 7 nights from 7th April in a studio 4 person apartment at the Residence Antares in the resort of Avoriaz, return Eurotunnel crossing for one vehicle with Flexiplus upgrade, 6 day ski & boot rental, 6 day Portes du Soleil ski passes with kids ski free offer and 6 x morning group ski lessons for the whole family.
Avoriaz is a perfect ski resort for families - its car free village offers a wide range of child friendly activities and amenities, including a cinema, bowling alley and 'Aquariaz', a huge indoor water park. It is also one of France's most northern ski areas, making it easily accessible both by car and from nearby Geneva airport.
The quote used by the Skipedia article was taken from 'Erna Low's Guide to Family Skiing', published in 1974. To read more about the extraordinary life of our founder, Miss Erna Low, visit the history section of our website, or you can purchase the biography of her life here »
