Skiing in Ischgl

Ischgl ski resort is a snowsports haven with something to offer every type of skier ̶ it’s well equipped for novices finding their feet, there are plenty of cruisy blues and exciting reds for intermediates, and a few fantastic black runs and off-piste opportunities for experts and free-riders. Top this off with the cross-border opportunities an Ischgl VIP Ski pass has to offer and an uber-efficient lift system linking the whole powdery playground, and you’ve got a resort to contend with. Take a look below at our top tips for skiing in Ischgl:

  • Three robust gondolas provide your main access to the slopes at Ischgl. There’s one at each side of the resort taking you to the 2320m mid-mountain station of Idalp and a third that whisks you to 2642m Paradatschgrat.

  • The Greitspitze is the highest peak here at 2,872 metres followed closely by Palinkopf with its station at 2,864 metres ̶ combine this heady altitude with superb snowmaking capacity and snow reliability is excellent in a long season from November right through to May. The vast majority of runs here are above the tree line, so head down to lower slopes to seek shelter in snowstorms.

  • The 239 kilometres of crisp corduroy in this sunny resort is heaven for intermediate skiers, with a vast network of sweeping blue and rapid red runs. If you’re looking for vertiginous vertical drops, there’s a cracking red run with a 1000m drop you can access from the big Piz Val Grondabahn cable car.

  • Novices should buy a full lift pass as this takes you from the resort up to the mountain base at Idalp via the Silvretta or Fimba lifts. This is where the ski school meets and there’s a lovely collection of nursery slopes where beginners are supported by a T-bar, chairlift and magic carpet. After you build your confidence you can tackle some tasty blue runs located on the snow bowl’s powdery east side.

  • In terms of off-piste skiing in Ischgl, there’s plenty to keep powder seeking skiers happy too ̶ hire a local mountain guide to unlock slopes with fresh dumps of pow and 50 per cent gradients, cliff-drop descents and more, spread across 20km of glorious freeride terrain.

It’s evident that Ischgl is perhaps best suited to novices and intermediates, but if you’re an expert downhill skier or free-rider travelling as part of a mixed ability family or group, there are enough advanced attractions to keep you reasonably satisfied here too, particularly, the black runs coming down Palinkopf and GreitspitzeFurther.

A reasonable 1400m resort height, a majority of slopes well above the tree line at 2000m and skiing available up to almost 3000m mean that Ischgl is amazingly snow-sure for a glacier resort. In fact, its expanse of lofty terrain is the best in Austria and if you want to find fab conditions early or late in the season, this is one of your best bets anywhere. Here’s the lowdown on snow conditions in Ischgl:

  • Base depth measurements in Ischgl might seem meagre compared to some rival resorts, but because it preserves its snow so well, it can compete with practically any resort in the world for snow-reliability.

  • One slight disadvantage of so many slopes being set at such a high altitude is that you can be exposed during inclement weather ̶ if you do experience a whiteout, head down below the treeline to seek shelter in the forest areas.

  • In the most recent season there was an 85cm total snowfall, average summit depth of 90cm, maximum summit depth of 120cm, maximum base depth of 70cm, average base depth of 70cm and largest snowfall of 40cm.

  • On the rare occasions when natural snowfall doesn’t quite deliver on expectations, an impressive armoury of snow cannons can cover up to 70% of the slopes with artificial snow.

  • The wildest party in town might be at Niko’s Hexenküche ̶ this busy venue next to the Silvretta cable car featured deft DJs on the wheels of steel and a lively clientele that loves to throw shapes on the dancefloor. Plus, at the end of the evening when you’re suitably refreshed you can also have fun trying to pronounce the bar’s name!

  • Paznauner Thaya is the perfect place to enjoy a chilled-out beer on the scenic sun terrace, snack on a freshly-baked pizza or enjoy a sumptuous slap-up meal in the serviced restaurant. When you want to wine and dine, this perpetually popular spot takes some beating.

  • If a glass or three of bubbly is floats your boat, you’ll love the chic and sophisticated setting of Champagnerhütt. If you like a laid back vibe with chillout sounds spun by resident DJs, this venue will be right up your strasse!

  • The Golden Eagle Pub is a British-style bar which has been an Ischgl institution or over 40 years. You’ll find a fine range of beers, wines and spirits here, a friendly crowd and a superb soundtrack of soul, rock and pop to help every evening go with a swing. When you want a traditional pub with a wonderful atmosphere, this is it!

  • Niki’s Stadl is another longstanding Ischgl hotspot where you can enjoy a traditional Tyrolean evening with oompah music and plenty of premium pilsener and strong shots to keep everyone feeling frisky the whole night long.

  • Pacha brings the Ibiza beach vibe to the mountains and this chic club is one of the best places to people watch in the resort as it’s regularly frequented by famous actors, models, sportspeople and entertainers.

  • Kitzloch is another Germanic oompah bar where the après sesh starts at 4pm and a lively crowd indulges in hearty singalongs. The cosy booths in this old-school bar are the perfect cubby holes for chatting away to friends, family or your significant other.

These vibrant venues are merely the tip of the après Iceberg in Ischgl, but hopefully they’ve whetted your appetite ̶ remember to leave some time for your skiing in between parties too!
