Types of Family Ski Holidays

There are many different kinds of families, which is why we never apply a one-size-fits-all approach to family ski holidays. Whichever country, ski area and resort you choose, we’ll listen keenly to your needs and arrange a break that exceeds the expectations of every member of your group. Take a look below at just a few of the various types of family-focused ski breaks you can choose with Erna Low.

We can help organise your ferry/tunnel tickets, find comfy and practical accommodation with well-appointed kitchenettes where you can whip up delicious snacks and meals, then source ski pass and equipment deals that help you make the most of skiing and snowboarding opportunities in and around your resort.

All-inclusive family ski breaks

When you want the ultimate hassle-free family ski holiday, going all-inclusive is an outstanding option. With all food and drink included in your holiday deal and the possibility of including components like ski lessons in your deal too, there’s nothing left for you to do except have a terrific time on and off the slopes.

Ski breaks for single parents

Planning a first-time ski holiday as a single parent? We can find you supportive, family-friendly ski hotel where helpful staff can advise on everything from childcare to ski school pickups and nearby cafes and restaurants. You’ll get to spend quality time on and off the slopes with your child, while opportunities for socialising with other parents or pampering yourself with some ‘me time’ in the spa can also be factored in. As you can see, there’s a family ski holiday for everyone at Erna Low!

Choosing Family-Friendly Ski Accommodation

Picking the right accommodation is important for any ski holiday but even more so when you’ve got kids in tow. Convenience is key, so you’ll probably want to choose a residence that’s ski-in/ski out or a short stroll from the slopes and if it’s also close to the resort centre that’s great too ̶ there might be fun activities like cinemas, ten pin bowling alleys and laser tag arenas on your doorstep, as well as reasonably-priced, family-friendly cafes and restaurants and supermarkets selling daily essentials. We can help you find accommodation with lots to do onsite too, like swimming pools and games rooms, while you also might need baby equipment, interconnecting rooms and a children’s evening meals service. Take a look at the different types of family ski accommodation you can choose below.

Family ski chalets

Ski chalets are the ultimate in Alpine-style cosiness ̶ who doesn’t love gathering round a roaring fire in the living room in their woolly jumpers after a thrilling days on the slopes and bonding over vin chaud or hot chocolate? High-end chalets have catering included, so you can expect sumptuous and healthy meals served at times that suit everyone. You’ll also often find chalet-style hotels in many resorts, which combine the charm of chalet design and catering with other onsite communal facilities, like health and wellness facilities.

Family ski apartments

When you love the independence of cooking and eating what you want, when you want (or ordering in delicious takeaway food when you can’t be bothered) then a family ski apartment will suit you down to the ground. You’ll easily find apartments in many different guises and sizes in various international ski resorts, but whether they sleep four or 10 guests or are basic and functional or posh and plush, they’ll always have fully-equipped kitchens and ample bathrooms.

Family ski hotels

Hotels might not offer the exclusivity of a private chalet (fellow guests will be around) but you can still enjoy privacy and comfort when you close the door to your room or suite, and you might enjoy the social benefits of hotel living ̶ sharing a drink in good company at the hotel bar or kids making friends at the swimming pool or fitness centre. Book on a half-board basis and you’ll enjoy a filling breakfast to fuel your adventures on the slopes and a hot, tasty meal will welcome you home at the end of an exciting day. When you want a relaxing experience with staff on hand to help with queries and ensure you’re settling in superbly, a family ski hotel is a fab choice. Erna Low will always help source the best ski accommodation for your needs and budget in your favourite resort ̶ designing the perfect family ski holiday package for you is an absolute pleasure.

Packing For Your Family Ski Holiday

When skiing or snowboarding with kids, you’ll need to bring a few different items than you would take on a beach resort break, but packing doesn’t need to be a drag. Skis, poles, snowboards and helmets can be pre-ordered with us and picked up at the resort, but here are a few items you might want to pack:

  • Thermal clothing.
  • Waterproof outerwear like a warm snowsuit or jacket and salopettes combination.
  • High-SPF sunblock for all the family to carry with them each day and apply as and when.
  • Ski gloves – take two pairs each in case you lose one.
  • Cosy outdoor boots with a sturdy sole.
  • Hat and scarf.
  • Indoor shoes. -All necessary baby accoutrements: nappies, baby food and baby formula are available in most resorts, but they might not stock the brands your little one is used to, so bring your own to save hassle and remember your wipes, cream, bibs and feeder cups. -Waterproof nappies and swimming costumes if you’ll be visiting the pool. -Baby monitor and plug adaptor. -Favourite toys and games.

Accommodation and resort staff will be glad to help you source anything you’ve forgotten, so don’t panic if you arrive, unpack and something essential is missing. The resorts we recommend always work hard to provide parents with peace of mind, so you’ll be ably supported throughout your stay and your kids will have a magical time in the mountains.

Ski Lessons & Childcare

Ski lessons are an important part of many family ski holidays. Here at Erna Low we really regularly organise family skiing holidays for beginners.

If your kids are novices then they’ll need supportive, professional instruction to help them find their feet and make the most of the mountains, but even intermediate and advanced skiers can benefit from instruction to polish the rough edges of certain techniques or learn a niche skiing or snowboarding discipline.

We usually work with ESF, which is a large and long-established ski school with thousands of highly qualified instructors in 250 ski resorts across the Alps offering lessons for all ages and abilities in English.

However, if ESF don’t operate in your resort or there’s another smaller, independent ski school that better meets your needs, we’ll certainly recommend them, and we have worked with a variety of providers over the years.

Some ski schools offer programmes for very young children which are partway between a creche and ski lesson ̶ for example, ESF’s Piou Piou Club gently introduces kids to skiing and Alpine nature, customs and conventions through fun and educational games and activities and classes are held on a half day or full day basis (with lunch included in the latter).

You’ll also find formal childcare facilities in most resorts or ski areas, and it’s always advisable to check whether staff are qualified with an NVQ or diploma in childcare and also (if the company is UK-run) whether staff are CRB-checked. As well as creche or nursery-type facilities where you drop your kids off for the duration, some resorts also offer nanny services with qualified staff who will care for your children at your own accommodation for an agreed time period while you hit the slopes or head out for a rare dinner date in adult company.

Off-slope family activities

Chances are that you and your kids won’t want to spend all day, every day on the slopes (as exhilarating as it is, it’s also tiring!), so family-friendly resorts typically offer a range of off-slope activities to keep everyone entertained during downtime.

You can look forward to anything from storytelling sessions in the forest to overnight igloo experiences and snow scooters to husky dog sledding and tobogganing ̶ ask us what’s on offer in your resort of choice and we’ll make sure you don’t miss out!

Choosing The Best Family Ski Resorts

Before you book a ski holiday in a new country for the first time (or if you’ve been before but not accompanied with kids), it pays to pick out a few resorts with particularly good reputations for family facilities and amenities. Read on for a few recommendations in the best European ski resorts for families:

Best Family Ski Resorts in France

France is fab for families and there are several ski resorts that stand out from the crowd. Avoriaz is particularly well equipped, with plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation and it’s a car-free resort where you’ll be whisked anywhere a little too far to ski on sleighs. There’s an excellent Village des Enfants with nursery slopes and kid-focused après activities, while the Riglet park is perfect for young snowboarders learning the ropes. Meanwhile, the woodland Burton Stash run is a magnet for more advanced riders and off the slopes, the Aquariaz aqua centre has a lovely pool, wave machines and lazy rivers.

Best Family Ski Resorts in Italy

Italian resorts offer great value for money for family ski holidays and La Thuile in the San Bernardo Ski Area is a good pick for snowy adventures with kids. It’s blessed by lots of fresh pow throughout the season, so conditions are good for ski holidays at Christmas, Easter and every time in between, and there’s a well-appointed children’s snow park called Fantaski which also serves as the ski school meeting point. There’s plenty of reliable childcare on offer and it’s also famed for its chocolate ̶ ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth!

Best Family Ski Resorts in Austria

Soll is a savvy pick for a family-friendly ski resort in Austria, with 13km of floodlit slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, a Skischule that trains toddlers as young as three years old and a Snow Pirates kids club that’s great fun for making even younger kids feel included. This resort has a lovely, ambient restaurant and lots of great restaurants that cater for kids.

Best Family Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Crans Montana is a fine example of a Swiss ski resort that kids will love and it’s particularly well suited to slightly older kids and teens, with two super snow parks, a boardercross area and even a big air bag where they can practise jumps without fear of wiping out on tough terrain. There’s plenty for younger kids too though, including the popular Snow Island area, which has pristine pistes crated specifically for children, and also offers sledding and tubing. There are several independent English-speaking babysitters here and the skiing is superb for adults too, with lots of brilliant blue runs for intermediates amidst the outstanding scenery.

Best Family Ski Resorts in Andorra

The Pyrenees can be just as pretty as the Alps and if you fancy a family ski holiday in Andorra, El Tarter is a good resort choice. This is a calm and peaceful set up with a diverse range of facilities for kids, including several designated fun areas, four pistes exclusively reserved for children and the best quality snow park in the entire principality. El Tarter also caters for kids of all ages with a kids club that accepts children from age four months to 12 years old.

Flights & Transfers for Family Ski Holidays

Organising convenient flights and transfers to your chosen resort is child’s play ̶ we’ll arrange an outbound flight from an airport near your home base and a private or shared transfer at the other end.

Organising Your Family Ski Holiday

As you can see, there are lots of factors to consider when organising a family ski holiday, but you don’t need to take on any of the organisation and admin yourself as it’s our pleasure to do that for you. We’ll listen carefully to all your preferences and requirements and design a family ski holiday that delivers brilliant value for money ̶ that’s the Erna Low way!
