Luxury ski resorts

Most ski resorts have luxury accommodation, dining and apres-ski options, but if you want a high-end, exclusive experience from start to finish, we can recommend a few locations that are particularly suited to those who appreciate the finer things in life. If you want to live like a VIP every day of your ski break, here are a few resorts where you’ll always feel like a million dollars:

  • Courchevel 1850 is the highest of the four plush ski villages that comprise Courchevel in France’s famous Three Valleys ski area and it could be argued that no other snowsports destination in the world caters for guests with refined tastes with such aplomb. There are no less than seven Michelin-starred restaurants here, two six-star hotels and 11 five-star hotels, so if you want to sleep like a baby and eat like an emperor, you’re in the right place! If you’re a foodie you’ll be in culinary heaven in almost every eatery here, but a couple of standout establishments include the two Michelin-starred Kintessence, where maestro Jean-Remi Caillon conjures up magical cuisine that will leave you spellbound, and The 1947 at the Cheval Blanc where gourmet Yannick Alleno serves up contemporary cuisine infused with creativity. Meanwhile, if designer labels are your bag, you can pick up unique pieces in a choice of two Valentino boutiques, or shop Burberry, Fendi, Stefano Ricci and more at Bernard Orcel, which has flown the flag for haute couture in Courchevel since 1975. Did we mention that the skiing is rather good too? There are 150km of pistes for all abilities at altitudes ranging from 1224m-3248m to explore locally, and 600km in the wider Three Valleys area!

  • Val d’Isère in Espace Killy combines high-altitude skiing, apres-ski energy and effortless elegance in a way that’s wonderfully unique and perhaps that’s why many visitors feel compelled to return again and again. Val has been operating as a ski resort since way back in the 1930s, so it’s had plenty of time to polish its customer service, facilities and amenities until everything positively gleams with a gorgeous glam sheen, and its superb skiing credentials were sealed when it was a key player in the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, when the Face de Bellevarde run (‘Le Face’) hosted the giant slalom, Super G and men’s downhill events in fine style. Whether you prefer skiing or snowboarding, you’ll be in your element in the vast and varied 300km Espace Killy ski domain, which is served by a swift 78-lift system, with skiing available up to a lofty 3456m at the Grande Motte Glacier. You’ll find plush accommodation and posh nosh aplenty in Val d’Isère, but it really excels when it comes to its stunning apres-ski scene. For starters, La Folie Douce must be the most famous brand name in Alpine after hours entertainment and it’s been mesmerising guests with its eclectic mix of live music, DJ sets, cabaret and tabletop dancing for decades. Alternatively, The Blue Note Bar serves stupendous alcoholic hot chocolate which you can sip while relaxing to an uber-cool soundtrack of jazz and funk tunes, while the Doudoune Club has attracted some of the world’s biggest DJs since it opened in 2008 and it’s the place where the beautiful people (like you!) let their hair down until 5am.

  • Méribel is another Three Valleys hotspot where you can definitely experience the high life in more ways than one. The skiing and scenery are sublime, from the heady high-altitude runs at the 2700m Saulire summit to Mont de Vallon which tops out at over 3000m, there are amazing on and off-piste opportunities available here for skiers and snowboarders of all stripes and a super-efficient gondola system whisks you up the mountains in mere minutes.

But Méribel is also famous for supercharged private chalets with fab features like private spas and cinemas, amazing restaurants and chic boutiques. If you’re after some serious retail therapy, Dolce & Gabbana, Longchamp and Prada will gladly help you flex your credit card, as will the iconic Coco boutique, while you can tempt your tastebuds with artisan Savoyard fare at Fruitiere, or enjoy a cathartic sauna, massage, facial or full body treatment in the delightful Deep Nature Spa. When you want to feel like a superstar during your luxury ski holiday, Méribel is a magnificent choice.

Luxury ski areas

If you want to pack as much premium snowsports satisfaction into your luxury ski break as possible, opt for a resort in a lift-linked ski area and take yourself off on a mini-tour of the hotspots in several neighbouring ski resorts. Here are a couple of superb ski areas where you can maximise your exclusive experiences:

  • With the stellar trinity of Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens (Europe’s highest ski resort), as well as charming smaller ski villages like Les Menuires and Saint Martin de Belleville, one prime pick for a luxury ski area has to be The Three Valleys. With world-class skiing and snowboarding, cutting-edge cuisine and awe-inspiring apres, sampling the on and off-slope delights of this terrific ski area over a few nights would certainly be a holiday to treasure.

  • Portes du Soleil is located just one and a half hours from Geneva and boasts a 650km skiable area shared between 12 gorgeous resorts including Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel and Champery. At the ‘Gates of the Sun’ you’ll find a vast selection of well-groomed pistes, powdery off-piste zones and dynamic snowparks, you’ll find chocolate box chalets, chic boutiques, bijou bars and romantic traditional pursuits like horse-drawn carriage rides.

Luxury ski accommodation

The hallmark of a luxury ski weekend or high-class ski holiday is first-rate accommodation. Although you’ll naturally want to maximise your time spent on the slopes and socialising at amazing après venues, having a beautiful bolthole to rest and recuperate with your significant other, family or friends is absolutely crucial. Luckily, whether you prefer a chic chalet, exclusive apartment or first-rate hotel, we have a superb selection of luxury ski accommodation.

Luxury ski chalets

The iconic chalet design is synonymous with Alpine charm and conviviality ̶ close your eyes and you can easily picture cosying up on a thick rug next to a roaring fire while warming the cockles of your heart with a generous glass of vin chaud. If spending your evenings in a sumptuous chalet floats your boat, Les Chalets du Forum in Courchevel 1950 fit the bill in fine style. Available in 1-3-bedroom configurations sleeping 4-10 guests in comfort, these 4-star cabins are the epitome of luxury, space and comfort, with ski-in/ski-out convenience Wi-Fi throughout and tasteful décor with tactile wood furnishings and soothing autumnal tones. Just 100m from the pistes in Courchevel, you can practically roll out of bed and onto the slopes, and those tastebud-tantalising Michelin-starred restaurants, cool cafes and suave nightspots are also just a stone’s throw away.

Luxury ski apartments

If you like your luxury with a dash of independence, perhaps a well-appointed ski apartment is a home from home that you’ll take to your heart? The best Alpine ski apartments are almost indistinguishable from high-class hotels, with a wide range of onsite amenities designed to cater to your every whim and Hotel Koh I Nor in Val Thorens is a prime example of one such setup. This ski-in/ski-out complex is located on the Plein Sud slope, so there’s a blue slope out and back, making it ideal for intermediates, and its 35 luxury self-catering ski apartments are a beautiful blend of traditional mountain and modern styles and the superb shops, bars and restaurants are a short stroll away. All apartments have satellite TV and free Wi-Fi as standard, as well as a fully fitted kitchen where you can prep tasty snacks when the mood takes you, although there’s also an excellent onsite restaurant and you can stay on a catered basis if you like a totally hassle-free dining option. There’s also a snazzy swimming pool, spa and sauna area where you can unwind those tired muscles after a tough day slopeside, and a well-stocked bar to slake your thirst and shoot the breeze with fellow bon vivants.

Luxury ski hotels

When you really want to switch off for a luxe ski weekend, a hotel is probably your best pick ̶ with uber-comfy suites, onsite restaurants, wonderful wellbeing centres and staff on hand to help you have the best time possible, you’ll be living your best life in a majestic mountain playground. Whether you’re cosying up as a couple or have kids in tow, we can recommend a luxury ski hotel that you won’t want to leave. If the pristine powder of Paradiski is proving too tempting to resist, the 5-star Hotel Edenarc in Arc 1800 is a brilliant base for the duration. This plush ski-in/ski-out pad boasts a heated pool, sauna, hammam, whirlpool and relaxation area, while indoor car parking and laundry facilities are available for an additional fee. Comfy, cosy and stylish suites are available with 1-2 bedrooms and larger units have fully fitted kitchenettes, but rather than bother prepping your own food, you’ll probably prefer to eat in the excellent in-house restaurant, or head out to sample the apres-ski delights of Les Arcs, which include the brilliant underground bar Club 73 and the sizzling Red Hot Saloon!

Luxury ski weekends

A long, luxury ski weekend can be the perfect tonic when you need to shake off the stresses and strains of everyday life and there are several glam locations with swift transfer times from nearby airports. For instance, Geneva Airport (GVA) is ideal for reaching Chamonix and Flaine in around an hour, Chambery Airport (CHF) is a short skip from Meribel and Val d’Isère, and Grenoble Airport (GNB) is perfectly located for transfers to Alpe d’Huez. Spoiling yourself with a ski weekend is simpler than you might think ̶ with an Erna Low package deal we can take care of every arrangement from your flights to accommodation and ski hire to ski passes, so that all you need to worry about when you arrive is having an absolute blast!

Exclusive apres-ski

When you want to party in style, there are several vibrant apres-ski venues to make a bee line for ̶ here are just a few honeytraps to check out for drinks, food and general good vibes:

  • Malaysia in Val Thorens is open til 4am, has a gargantuan 700 square metre dancefloor and attracts headline DJs like Calvin Harris and Afrojack ̶ pretty swish indeed!

  • L’Abarset is a popular spot for visitors to Andorra ski resorts Soldeu and Pas de la Casa. Delicious drinks are very reasonably priced and there’s DJ sets and live music on the sunny terrace from 5pm onwards.

  • Meribar is one of the best places to drink and be merry in Meribel, with its lip-smacking bar snacks, lashings of fresh beer and warm friendly ambience. There’s also live music at this venue and it’s a great place for laid-back fun.

  • Copina is a sophisticated spot bang in the middle of Courchevel 1650 where you can sample tasty tapas, fine wines, artisan cocktails and craft beers in intimate surroundings. The bar itself is petite but when the sun is shining the party usually spills out onto the terrace where there’s often a live band playing cool tunes to enhance the elegant vibes.

  • Le Signal in Val d’Isère is located in a former refuge at a lofty 2330m above sea level at the top of the Fornet cable car and it has won ‘Best Mountain Restaurant’ several times at the European Snow awards thanks to delicious traditional dishes made with the freshest local ingredients and a self-service section which is renowned for its peerless selection of sublime fresh soups.

  • Hospiz Alm in Austria’s St Anton is a must-visit for oenophiles because put simply, it must have the most labyrinthine wine list on the planet and just to prove that it’s no paper tiger, you can even pop down to the cavernous wine cellar where you’ll find a jaw-dropping collection of the world’s best vintage wines. The food is rather good too, so you’ll find something sumptuous to soak up all of that that rarefied vino.

  • La Bouitte in Saint Martin de Belleville sports three Michelin stars and is widely regarded as one of the finest restuarants France has ever produced. Located in a charming former Savoyard farm house, and operated livingly by the Meilleur family, this exquisite eatery will take your tastebuds to another dimension. Whenever you want a tailor-made ski break in the world’s best snowsports destinations, don’t hesitate to call Erna Low ̶ with a wealth of experience in ski travel, we can sprinkle a little stardust that helps create magical memories!
