Overview of Niederau

Surrounded by snowy meadows, tree-lined rolling hills and perfectly nestled in an unspoilt valley in the Tyrolean Alps, the quiet village of Neiderau sits completely enveloped from the outside world - though only less than 2 hours from Innsbruck. Together with Alpbach and Wildschönau, Niederau forms part of the Ski Juwel ski area, one of Austria’s largest linked ski areas. The wider ski area is accessible via Auffach, which is just a short shuttle bus away from Niederau. The local ski area includes the slopes in the Wildschönau valley including the Markbachjoch ( the ski centre and main ski area) north-facing Lanerköpfl mountain and the Schatzberg ski area in Auffach; all of which cover 69 runs and stretch just over 48 kilometres in total. Thanks to its connection to the Ski Juwel ski area an additional 109 kilometres of pistes are available. The resort sits at an altitude of 826 metres with runs peaking at 1,903 metres. The ski area in Niederau is preferred by beginners and intermediates although it does have a few challenging runs for advanced and experienced skiers. Quiet, unassuming and picture-perfect in appearance and nature, Niederau is the first and the largest ski village in the charming Wildschönau valley it shares with the other smaller resorts of Oberau, Mühltal, Auffach and Thierbach. Niederau ( and its neighbours in the Wildschönau valley) offers visitors the chance to experience an idyllic and authentic ski holiday escape in a charming Austrian village. Life here is taken at a relaxed pace and the resort is perfect for families with young children or groups of friends looking to learn and improve their skiing whilst also enjoying a slow-paced quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The valley is a sight to behold, dotted with traditional Alpine-style buildings of wood and stone and overlooked by the mediaeval gothic church against a backdrop of the surrounding snow-covered valley. The Wildschönau Valley has also been the recipient of the ‘Best Family Ski Area’ award and the ‘Friendliest Staff’ award due to its exceptional family-focused approach and visitor feedback, reviews and satisfaction. Accommodation here is delivered at a high standard and is made up of mostly Alpine-style hotels, guest houses and apartments; some of which offer door to door skiing perfect for families. There are several non-ski activities for the family at Niederau which include fantastic walks, snowshoeing and a 6 kilometres toboggan run.

Skiing in Niederau

The runs at Niederau are generally best suited to beginners and intermediates trying to improve on their newfound abilities. The resort is perfectly set up to teach and help improve new starters thanks to the fantastic nursery slopes and beginner area. The slopes at the resort are ideal for beginners as they are gentle and hardly ever crowded even in the peak seasons. Once the snow plough and turns have been mastered, beginners can begin to try their hand higher up the Markbachjoch. Fancy more challenges, catch the free shuttle to Auffach for access to the Ski Juwel ski area.

Although it’s famously suited for beginners, there are a host of off-piste opportunities at Niederau. The ski area also has 4 black runs decent enough to challenge advanced and seasoned skiers. There is a black run that leads all the way down to the village from Lanerköpfl at 1,621 metres.

After tackling the red runs on the Markbachjoch at Niederau, intermediates may not even need to access the Ski Juwel ski area as they will be spoiled for choice at Schatzberg. There are a number of easy reds, ideal for confidence building, most of which are on the south-facing slopes of the mountain.

Snowboarding in Niederau

Niederau has a good variety of runs for all skill level riders. Beginners in particular who are comfortable using T-Bars and Pomas will find it pleasant here. There is a good T-Bar run which starts at the top of the Markbachjoch with stunning views of the valley. There are a few short runs at the bottom of the mountain which are perfect for building confidence and can serve well as practice runs. Challenging reds lay further up the valley on Schatzberg.

Niederau does not have a snow park but snowboarders can access both the Family Snowpark in Wildschönau and the Alpbachtal Snowpark via the Ski Juwel pass. Both parks are very well equipped with obstacles and terrains for all ski levels including numerous kickers, rollers, boxes and half pipes.

Snow Conditions in Niederau

No weather forecast available

Not renowned for excess snowfall over the years, the resort still manages to ensure that the conditions on the piste are as excellent as can be. The natural snowfall has fallen short a number of times in recent years however, Niederau’s 17 snow cannons cover the entire mountain ensuring shortages are hardly noticed. The pistes are also groomed on a daily basis.
