Snow chains

Title

Snow chains

Snow Chains

It is likely that you will have to negotiate adverse road conditions when driving in the Alps and snow chains are a legal requirement in the majority of European countries. Buying snow chains by the roadside can be very expensive and the quality is generally very poor so it is advisable to rent or buy them before you go. We have negotiated special rates with Polar Snowchains who offer easy fit snow chains and other travel products such as warning triangle, breathalysers, bulb kit etc. for all vehicle types. Polar Snowchains can offer Erna Low customers a 10% discount by quoting Erna Low.

Premium snowchains are approximately £40 to rent (up to 4 weeks rental period), with courier charges starting at £7 each way, so you may find it cheaper to purchase a set of budget snowchains, which should be fine for small and mid-sized vehicles.  Budget snowchains start at less than £30 a pair.

For more information visit Polar Snowchains at their website www.snowchains.com, contact them on 01732 360 638 or email polar@snowchains.com.

If you are unsure as to the exact requirements of the area to which you are travelling, you can find further information on the AA website.

The difference between winter tyres and snow chains

Winter Tyres

Winter tyres are made of a softer rubber compound that regular tyres. They do not harden as much in colder temperatures and therefore provide improved grip in adverse weathers conditions such as snow, ice, frost and even wet roads. Winter tyres are mandatory in some European countries during the winter months, so it is important to check the local regulations prior to travel.

Snow Chains

Snow chains are now compulsory in many European countries (where signs dictate and depending on local conditions), so it is important to check this prior to travel. Weather conditions can change rapidly, therefore to be on the safe side, you should always carry a set of chains when travelling to mountainous regions. Snow chains can be tricky to fit, so we would recommend test-fitting them a couple of times at home before you travel, when it is warm and dry.
