Many of the Swiss ski resorts are breathtakingly beautiful so it is no surprise that as far back as 1902 Sir Henry Lunn organised trips to Adelboden and Wengen, and when Erna Low started her ski company in 1932, Switzerland was a firm favourite, with Zermatt and Wengen her top choices. Ever since, Switzerland has been at the top of many a skier’s wish list of destinations. Imagine chocolate box style chalets and stunning scenery and add in accommodation generally of a very high standard making ski holidays in Switzerland a good option for those looking for something with a little more character than the large purpose built French resorts.

A great example of this is Zermatt, which is perhaps the most famous Swiss ski resort. The amazing views of the Matterhorn mean that it is as popular in summer as it is in winter and it provides some of the most amazing skiing in the Alps. It has three inter-linked ski areas and its own underground funicular railways linking Zermatt to Sunegga-Rothorn. You can also pop over to Cervinia for lunch if you have any Euros in your wallet and marvel at the Klein Matterhorn cable car which provides some of the highest skiing in Europe. From here you can access an experts only ski area with off-piste routes diving off the 3,532m Stockhorn at the very top.

The skiing in Switzerland

Although Switzerland is known for its attractive cog railways providing an authentic mountain experience, a lot of ski resorts in Switzerland have invested heavily in updating their lift systems, most notably in Verbier. Recognized as one of the premier backcountry ski resorts in the world, many skiers return to Verbier in order to enjoy the steep and challenging slopes and glitzy restaurants.

Another option for those skiing in Switzerland is to try out the Jungfrau ski area – which boasts gentle beginner ski slopes as well as epic freeride zones – all abilities are taken care of in this unique ski area of over 200km of pistes. Perfect places to base yourselves on a Switzerland ski holiday are Grindelwald, Wengen or Murren – the latter is home of the ‘Inferno Race’ – the wildest downhill ski race that has been thrilling skiers since 1928.
