Overview of Ski Resorts With Short Transfers

Short ski trips during the ski season are an increasingly popular trend among ski enthusiasts. Skiing has the potential to get addictive - ok maybe “addictive” is a strong word, but I’m sure that we can all agree that once you have developed the skill and love for the sport, it does get quite difficult to ignore the urge to whisk yourself and your family, partner etc off to the slopes for a short ski retreat. You may be coming to the end of an extremely busy quarter at the office or maybe you have been part of a team that has just pulled off a successful project and are very much in need of some time away to unwind for a few days only. Short ski trips are perfect for romantic couples who are both fond of spontaneous short trips together; what better way to propose to your other half than the romantic snow-capped peaks in the Alps. Time is probably the most precious commodity when you visit the Alps, especially when you are on a short visiting trip for only a few days. With limited time to spare you want to make the best of it and save as much of it as possible. One of the smartest ways of doing this is ensuring that your arrival and departure dates leave with enough time to actually ski on those days and the best way to do this is to ensure that your transfer times are as short as possible allowing you to arrive at the resort in good time and still be able to hit the slopes. Search for resorts that have the shortest transfer times which allow you to arrive early enough to still get on the pistes and leave late enough to still have a ski session in the morning and catch a transfer to the airport later. The shorter the trip duration, the more time is available to spend on settling on checking in at your accommodation, getting kitted up and heading out to the ski lifts. You may also have other plans, like having a nice dinner or enjoying a non-ski activity on your first day; the choice is yours. Also, keep in mind when searching for short transfer airports that smaller airports are less busy than international airports and may result in quicker customs clearance and baggage reclaim.

La Clusaz, France ( Geneva International Airport, 59 minutes, 67 kilometres)

An authentic alpine retreat, the old mountain commune of La Clusaz is just over 67 kilometres away from Geneva international airport and has a transfer time of 1 hour. This ski resort is so far one of the easiest to get to and is currently among the closest ski resorts to any airport in France, making the 1-hour transfer one of the quickest transfer routes available to make. Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, La Clusaz is also less than 1 hour 30 minutes transfer away from Grenoble airport as well and could take anything from 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours and 15 minutes from Lyon airport. La Clusaz is a lovely traditional resort to visit and it is perfect for a short break. An old farming village now made a ski resort, it boasts a very rustic and gallic charm. La Clusaz offers a very rich cultural experience; it is an authentic mountain village that has sustained the test of time before becoming a ski resort. Its old buildings still remain in the village and some of its residents have generations of their ancestry still thriving in La Clusaz. It really is a great option for a short ski break especially if you are planning on visiting with the children. Its short transfer means there’s less time at the airport trying to shepherd the children, it’s a family-friendly resort and its pistes are mostly suitable for beginners and young children. There is also a mix of easy and slightly challenging reds best suited for intermediate skiers and a few short but steep blacks and off-piste opportunities for advanced skiers. It is also a postcard-pretty resort in the heart of the Massif des Aravis and has fantastic views of the towering Mont Blanc.

Chamonix, France ( Geneva International Airport, 1 Hour 15 Minutes, 103 Kilometres)

Chamonix is a very popular and appealing ski resort. It is a significantly historic village nestled just beneath the majestic Mont Blanc that draws skiers and snowboarders of all ski abilities to its slopes every year. There are so many things to do in Chamonix for skiers and non-skiers making it a truly fantastic short ski break for the family or even a romantic escape. Located just 103 kilometres from Geneva airport, Chamonix is a top choice for a short ski holiday break for all visitor types, whether you are visiting for skiing or here to party the weekend away. Transfers to Chamonix from Geneva airport only take about 1 hour 15 minutes. This is ideal and very convenient because Geneva receives multiple flights from destinations all across the world every day making it very easy to access from most cities in Europe. If you were flying from London or Manchester, for example, you could possibly be at the resort before noon and still have enough time to hit the slopes. After Geneva International airport, Chambery airport is the next closest airport to Chamonix at 145 kilometres between them and a 1 hour 30 minutes transfer.
Chamonix shares borders with Italy and Switzerland making it easily accessible from both countries. It is one of the French Alps liveliest resorts and constantly has an amazing holiday buzz all season attracting not only skiers but sight-seeing tourists as well who come to experience the town and view the majestic Aiguilles de Chamonix mountain range including the magnificent Mont Blanc which peaks at 4,810 metres. The mountain range has arguably some of the best and most intriguing skylines with their jagged peaks adding dramatic effect. Jump on the Aiguille du Midi cable car and travel 3,482 metres to enjoy spectacular views and 360 panoramas across the 3 different countries of France, Italy and Switzerland. If that was not enough, take the little red train that departs from the resort and up to the Mer de Glace glacier at 1,913 metres for some spectacular views and try to visit the recently refurbished Grand Hotel du Montenvers, the Temple of Nature, the Glaciorium, the crystal museum and the ice caves all within the glacier. It truly is one of the best resorts to visit on a short break thanks to its short transfer times and a myriad of non-ski activities that are available to enjoy if skiing was not your reason to visit the resort. Chamonix has a world-class apres-ski with some of the best parties taking place all ski season.

Mayrhofen, Austria ( Innsbruck Airport, 1 hour 5 minutes, 73.6 kilometres)

Mayrhofen is one of the Austrian Alps most frequented ski resorts and is a surprising entry as one of the Alps shortest transfers and attractive short ski break resorts. Located only 73.6 kilometres away from Innsbruck airport, Mayrhofen has a transfer time of just 1 hour and 3 minutes ( ideally in good traffic and good weather conditions). Salzburg airport is the next airport within proximity of Mayrhofen but it has a transfer time of 2 hours and 30 minutes which is more than double the transfer time from Innsbruck airport, so ideally getting to Mayrhofen via Innsbruck airport is most convenient. A great option for short ski breaks, there is more than enough terrain to sink your skis into at Mayrhofen even if you are visiting for a few days. The resort has great pistes for every skill ability, with intermediates likely to have the most joy on the pistes thanks to its variety of long, cruising, interlinked reds. Advanced skiers and professionals can test their ability down the world-famous Harakiri black run which features in the World Ski Cup competitions and is one of the Alps most challenging runs with a 78% gradient, stretching a whopping 1,500 metres. If you came for the thrills, it does not get any more thrilling. It is also the perfect short ski getaway for snowboarders and freestylers of all skill abilities on its PenkenPark on Action Mountain Penken. It is a huge attraction for snowboarding enthusiasts, constantly featuring a full crowd in its 6 dedicated areas. If you are planning on visiting with the kids and spending some quality time with the family on the slopes, check out Mount Ahorn, which is the perfect winter wonderland for families. Here, you will find wide pistes perfect for beginners and young children. Visit the family park with the kids and get on the FunRide Ahorn and enjoy its easy gradient and gentle wave runs. There is much to take in at Mayrhofen apart from its skiing. Mayrhofen has managed to perfectly preserve its original Tyrolean architectural integrity whilst still keeping up its modern and contemporary resort setting. The village features traditional wooden Alpine chalet-style buildings and multicoloured buildings quite synonymous with Austrian ski resorts. The resort also features fantastic world-class events such as its musical shows and its Altitude Comedy Festival; great events to enjoy and with the short trips to the resort, surely worth the travel.

Zell am See, Austria ( Salzburg Airport, 1 Hour 17 Minutes, 76 kilometres )

With only 76 kilometres between Zell am See and Salzburg airport, we are looking at a transfer time of between 1 hour, 10 minutes and 1 hour 20 minutes depending on traffic and weather conditions on the day. This transfer time surely makes it a very attractive option for a short escape to the Alps. The nearest major airport to Zell am See is the Munich international airport which is located over 200 kilometres away and has a transfer time of about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The perfect ski holiday break especially for the family, Zell am See offers one of the shortest transfers filled with activity-packed options for the family. The resort centre is filled with an authentic Austrian charm with its cobblestone streets, upmarket boutiques and friendly cafes. It has a picture-perfect postcard atmosphere aided by its promenade looking out to its large lake and the Hohe Tauern mountain range in the distance. The lake is frozen over the winter period for dramatic effect but do not be tempted to go ice skating just yet. It is the ideal location for a break away from the bustle of city life and a great option to recharge your batteries over a few days on the slopes. Zell am See has 138 kilometres of varying slopes across its ski area from its tree-lined slopes on the Schmittenhöhe ( the local mountain ) to its wide-open slopes further up the mountain. Advanced and intermediate level skiers can take the free shuttle bus over to Kaprun for long reds. Head over to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier for some high-altitude skiing above 3,000 metres for some guaranteed snow. The Schmittenhöhe however, while known for its beginner area, also has 3 challenging reds that advanced skiers will find enticing. Visiting with the kids? Head straight for the Maiskogel Family Mountain which features all types of activities from nursery slopes and gentle pistes to its famous all year toboggan run, the Alpine Coaster Maisi Flitzer; a 1,300-metre length roller coaster-like run with waves, bridges and curves. For ski enthusiasts, families and the beautiful scenery on offer, Zell am See is certainly a top destination for short transfers.

Morzine, France ( Geneva Airport, 1 hour 30 minutes, 78 kilometres)

One of France’s and the European Alps most popular and most frequented ski resorts, Morzine adds a short transfer to its many qualities as the perfect ski holiday destination. Located only 78 kilometres away, Morzine is one of the closest ski resorts to Geneva airport with a transfer time of 1 hour 30 minutes. A favourite among British ski holidaymakers, Geneva is easily accessible via direct flight from 18 airports in Britain including all the London airports, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Aberdeen, Dublin and Belfast. Champery airport is located in France and is only an additional 10 minutes away from Morzine in the Portes du Soleil, but as a smaller local airport, it has far fewer international connections. Regardless of which of the many airports in Britain or Ireland you are flying from, if your flight lands at Geneva International airport on or before 10 am, you could be strapping on your ski boots just after lunchtime. Morzine represents the ideal short ski break holiday thanks to its vast ski terrain which caters to all ski ability types, its fantastic resort facilities, amazing apres ski and variety of non-ski activities so even if you are not an avid skier or snow sports enthusiast, there are more than enough activities to fill up your holiday itinerary. With access to the 650 kilometres of pistes across two countries of France and Switzerland, including popular resorts of Avoriaz, Chatel and Les Gets there is an abundance of ski terrain to cover over your short ski break to Morzine. The extensive ski area also has varying ski terrain across the area that stretches over altitudes of between 1,000 metres and 2,350 metres. Snowboarders and freestylers should also consider short ski breaks to Morzine with easy access from to resort to the terrain parks at Avoriaz and Les Gets for some awesome rails and kickers. Morzine also has massive off-piste opportunities through its tree-lined pistes and powder bowls. Morzine also has more than 100 bars and restaurants across the resort making it very easy to reserve a table, enjoy a meal and head out on a lively evening. The resort is well known for its famed apres-ski evenings so if you are after a nice weekend of partying and letting your hair down, you can visit Morzine, enjoy the drinks and table dancing and still make it back home with enough time for the hang-over to subside.

Additional Considerations

The lovely resort of Courmayeur in Italy is 150 kilometres away from Turin airport. However, just like Chamonix which sits on the French side of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur is the ski resort on the Italian side of the mountain and is only 112 kilometres from Geneva airport allowing for a much shorter transfer. Staying in Italy, both Cervinia and Sauze d’Oulx are only 1 hour 30 minutes away from Turin airport, respectively. Both are charming Italian resorts great for romantic getaways and worth looking into. If you fancy Switzerland, you should consider Verbier for a short break. It's 160 kilometres from Geneva International airport which has a longer transfer time than most other resorts listed, however, considering its epic apres-ski scene, glamorous reputations and access to the largest ski area in Switzerland, it may be worth the extra half an hour trip.
