Argentière Ski Holidays
With a historic mountaineering heritage and a reputation that extends well beyond its size, the resort offers something many larger, modern resorts sometimes miss - genuine mountain character. Unlike its busier, more popular neighbour, Argentière offers a calm escape, with the volume turned down a notch to match the resort's relaxed pace. Its dramatic Mont Blanc backdrop, 18th-century Baroque church, and traditional Savoyard community (that really do live there year-round!) all contribute to the resort's unmistakable charm.
Argentière has some serious snowsports pedigree, too. The legendary Kandahar downhill run from the Grands Montets regularly hosts World Cup races and is considered one of the most challenging downhill courses in the Alps. Argentière also works well as a base for exploring the wider ski area valley. It is connected to Chamonix by regular buses, offering excellent access to off-piste terrain for experienced skiers, and the views of the Argentière Glacier and surrounding peaks are spectacular.
With an Erna Low holiday package to Argentière, you’re in for a genuine mountain village experience with access to world-class skiing at fantastic value.
Far less busy than Chamonix, Argentière's steep runs and direct Grands Montets access make it the perfect escape for a quiet break with thrilling runs

Mountain facts
The majority of skiing in Argentière is centred on the Grands Montets area, which offers genuinely impressive terrain. The slopes range from 1,235m to 3,275m at the top of the Lognan glacier (over a 2,000m vertical drop, one of the largest in the Alps). Most runs face north or north-west, keeping the snow in excellent condition well into later months of the season.
Argentière largely favours intermediates and advanced skiers chasing proper Alpine challenges. The runs are predominantly across red and black ratings, with just enough blues to keep beginners from feeling totally left out. Vast snowfields, couloirs, and glacier runs make it a magnet for freeriders and off-piste adventurers (bring a guide!); yes, it's that kind of vibe on the slopes at Argentière. Serious business.
Snow conditions in Argentière
Argentière enjoys some of the most reliable snow conditions in the Alps. With an altitude range that spans between 1,235m and 3,275m, you’re most likely to be skiing above the snowline for most of the season. The resort's north-facing slopes are also a key factor in its reliable snow conditions. They hold far better snow quality and have historically stayed cold and powdery into spring.
The season here typically runs from early December to early May, with the Grand Montets glacier offering summer skiing as well. Snowfall is generally abundant in Argentière, as it is a high-precipitation area, with the upper slopes rarely suffering from a lack of coverage.
While base depths lower down the slopes may vary in lean years, the higher terrain almost always delivers. Simply put, if snow reliability is a priority for you, Argentière is a smart choice.
Skiing in Argentière
- Generally, Argentière doesn't offer a wide variety of options for beginners. Newbies and first-timers have a nursery area in the Les Chosalets area where the ski schools are located. There is also a handful of gentle blues further up the tree line around Plan Joran and the Tabé lift, which are great for building confidence and can be a bit of fun going over a few times for progression. For more options, beginners can take advantage of Argentière’s easy transport connections to Chamonix, where they can explore a few more blues.
- Intermediates have a lot to rave about in Argentière, particularly the red runs in the Lognan and Bochard areas. The area features varied terrain, moguls, and challenging sections that'll test any intermediate skier's technique. The Plan Joran area does offer some slightly mellower options when it’s time for a little breather.
- Argentière truly comes into its own with thrilling, advanced slopes that cater to seasoned pros. Almost half of the runs here are black, steep and super technical. Runs like the Pylônes and Point de Vue are demanding of solid technique, but it's the off-piste around Grand Montets that is legendary. Advanced skiers travel specifically for terrain like this. Routes like the Pas de Chèvre and other descents towards the Vallée Blanche are infamous among veterans. The terrain can be treacherous, and conditions may change rapidly, so hiring a qualified guide is essential.
Snowboarding in Argentière
- Argentière is a snowboarder's dream, with the Grands Montets arguably the standout freeriding destination across the Chamonix Valley. Its raw mountain terrain and reliable snow are a big draw for riders chasing long, thrilling descents.
- There's a small snowpark in the Lognan mid-station area, with kicks, rails, boxes, and a boardercross for sessions and tricks. It's not a big park, but it's still enough for hitting airs and jibs, plus, there's a video setup to review runs. Argentière, and Chamonix by extension, are more freeride-focused.
- The Grands Montets’ big sell for freeriders is its expansive natural terrain with powder stashes, gullies and glacial routes offering (near) endless carving opportunities. The Bochard and Herse areas of the mountain offer fantastic off-piste playgrounds with numerous exploration opportunities. The terrain can be unforgiving and is as beautiful as it is treacherous, so please bring a qualified guide with you; we not only recommend it, but insist on it.

What's available at Argentière ski resort?
Après-ski in Argentière
Après-ski in Argentière is a relaxed, sociable affair full of alpine character. While Chamonix is the party hub of the valley, Argentière has a laid-back buzz about it. It's not a completely dull affair, though; it's lively enough for skiers looking for a few drinks and laughs when the lifts close for the day.
- The après typically kicks off in the resort centre, where bars are largely within walking distance of each other. Popular bars like Stone Bar and The Office Bar offer a lively atmosphere, a good selection of drinks, and pub grub.
- Fubar, at the foot of the Grands Montets lifts, is Argentière’s party hub. Open till 2 am every day, it's where skiers go for a bit more than a few quiet drinks. Live bands, happy hours, table top games and even a mechanical bronco machine for laughs, is the vibe here. Great for the party animals who somehow find themselves in Argentière. Chamonix is always “down the road” for skiers looking for a bit more.
Facilities in Argentière
Argentière keeps things simple and functional, with skiers and holiday makers able to find everything they need on their holiday without the commercial overload of larger resorts. The resort features a standard supermarket with all the self-catering essentials, as well as a few smaller shops, a bakery, a pharmacy, and several ski rental shops. For downtime away from the slopes, the resort has a cinema and an outdoor ice rink. Some properties have spa and wellness facilities, and while the entrance may be restricted to guests, Chamonix has a wider range of options to explore.
Facilities for children in Argentière
Argentière’s relaxed atmosphere lends the resort a charming, family-friendly vibe. While smaller than the typical modern, purpose-built village, the village offers everything you need for a comfortable stay with children. The restaurants, ski shops, and supermarkets, all unsurprisingly, cater to families visiting with small children.
Away from the slopes, families can enjoy simple in-resort entertainment, including a small cinema, indoor play areas and easy winter walks suitable for pushchairs. There are also childcare services and local nurseries available during peak weeks (inquire at the tourist office or accommodation for recommendations). Plus, the resort's flat layout and reliable train and bus links make getting around with children straightforward.
