Les Gets Ski Holidays

For those in the know, Les Gets isn't just another stop on a grand French ski holiday; it’s an absolute gem.

Tucked away in the Haute-Savoie region, this resort offers a winning combination of traditional Savoyard charm, world-class skiing, and a wonderfully family-friendly atmosphere that makes it a firm favourite year after year. If you’re looking for a ski holiday that balances vast terrain with a welcoming, village vibe, Les Gets should be very high on your list.

The village itself is utterly captivating. With its wooden chalets, low-rise buildings, and picture-postcard church spire, it has retained the authentic, unpretentious feel of a traditional French Alpine community. It sits comfortably at an altitude of 1,172m, meaning you truly feel connected to the mountain. One of its key selling points is the convenience: you can genuinely ski 'skis clicked on in the village' and be on the slopes in minutes. What’s more, its advantageous position provides absolutely stunning, panoramic views of the majestic Mont Blanc range - a backdrop that never fails to take your breath away.

Les Gets acts as a fantastic gateway to one of the largest ski areas in the world: the mighty Portes du Soleil. This colossal domain spans France and Switzerland, offering an astonishing 650km of interconnected skiable terrain. It’s also directly linked to its well-known neighbour, Morzine, making the combined Les Gets/Morzine area a formidable destination in itself, boasting 120km of beautifully maintained slopes. The sheer scale on offer means you could ski for weeks and still find new slopes to explore, yet the immediate local area provides a perfectly contained, high-quality experience for shorter stays.

The vertical drop in Les Gets is significant, rising from the village base at 1,172m up to a maximum altitude of 2,002m. The local Les Gets/ Morzine area has a generous and well-balanced piste breakdown, tailored perfectly for the cruising skier: long, rolling runs ideal for intermediates. The longest slope you can tackle here stretches for a remarkable 8km.

The skiing is generally split across two main areas: Chavannes, the go-to sector for intermediates and family skiing, and Mont Chéry, which is known for its more challenging runs, better snow preservation, and, critically, those unparalleled views. If you enjoy taking the skinny skis out, there are 17km of dedicated cross-country slopes available, too.

Snow conditions in Les Gets

When it comes to snow, Les Gets has a pleasant reputation for reliability. The resort often benefits from a localised microclimate which can attract snowfall when other areas face rain - a definite advantage. However, as with many lower-lying resorts, snow conditions can sometimes be variable at the very lowest village level. Rest assured, the runs back down to the resort are typically well-maintained, thanks to significant investment in artificial snow and snow guns, ensuring you can always ski back to your chalet door. You can generally rely on good conditions from Christmas until late March. As a lower-altitude resort, April can be a little iffy, but the snow quality remains good, particularly when you factor in the easy access to the higher-altitude runs within the wider Portes du Soleil domain.

Skiing in Les Gets

Les Gets is an absolutely excellent destination for beginners. You'll find two main nursery slopes conveniently located in the village centre, allowing novices to get their ski legs right away. Designated beginner areas such as Chamois and Mauve offer gentle gradients in a safe, unintimidating environment.

The resort truly finds its sweet spot with intermediates. The abundance of Blue and Red runs, especially across the sprawling Chavannes area, makes this a dream destination for those who love to cruise and clock up the kilometres. You can spend a glorious day simply following the sun and exploring the beautifully groomed pistes without ever needing to take the same run twice.

For advanced skiers, there’s plenty to get the heart pumping. Head straight to Mont Chéry for a selection of genuinely challenging Red runs that test technique and stamina. For a real thigh-burner, the Myrtles Black run is widely considered one of the hardest in the resort, gaining a reputation for becoming icy and bumped up due to its popularity. The sheer size of the Portes du Soleil opens up a wealth of exhilarating, managed off-piste areas for those looking to seek out some fresh powder.

Snowboarding in Les Gets

Snowboarders are wholeheartedly welcomed in Les Gets and, like skiers, benefit from excellent access to the entire, lift-linked Portes du Soleil area. The resort’s terrain is generally forgiving and rolling, with minimal flat sections, which is always a bonus for snowboarders.

Freestyle enthusiasts will be particularly drawn to the dedicated Jib District snowpark. This area is thoughtfully designed, inviting freestylers of all levels to practice and perfect their tricks, featuring a mix of rails, boxes, and kickers. Whether you’re a complete novice looking to hit your first box or a seasoned shredder, the Jib District provides a fun and progressive environment.

Après-ski in Les Gets

The après-ski scene in Les Gets is wonderfully relaxed and refreshingly family-focused. While it may not compete with the rowdier, high-altitude party resorts, you'll still find several convivial spots to enjoy a well-deserved post-ski pint and swap slope stories in a civilised atmosphere.

  • Tucked away by the Chavannes lift, L’Aprèski Bar Resto offers a convenient, immediate transition from piste to pint. It’s got a great terrace that catches the late afternoon sun and serves up a lively, though not overly hectic, atmosphere right at the end of the day.
  • Located in the village centre, Vina Annapurna bar and restaurant is famous for its chic, welcoming vibe and fantastic wine selection - perfect for those looking to enjoy a more sophisticated, slightly quieter drink after skiing.
  • An Antipodean-themed spot (hence the name!), Le Boomerang is known for showing live sports. It has a casual, friendly atmosphere and a good selection of international beers, making it a reliable choice for a fun, easy-going evening.
  • Le Barbylone is one of the more contemporary and stylish venues in the village. In the evenings, it often features a DJ or live music, making it a good choice if you're looking for a slightly later, buzzier atmosphere without crossing into full-on club territory.
  • Black Bear is extremely popular with both locals and tourists. It’s a classic pub-style venue known for its extensive drinks menu and friendly staff, offering a warm and welcoming place to unwind.
These spots ensure that Les Gets offers the perfect end to a day on the mountain - sociable, warm, and ready for you to put your feet up.
