Gressoney Ski Holidays

Tucked away in Italy’s Aosta Valley, Gressoney sits at the heart of the vast Monterosa ski circuit, linking Champoluc to the west and Alagna to the east.

It’s a charming, quietly confident resort made up of two main villages - Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Gressoney-La-Trinité - each offering its own blend of authentic, Alpine warmth and laid-back Italian style. With the iconic Monte Rosa calmly towering over the resort, the atmosphere alone is enough to win anyone over.

Gressoney has a proud snowsports history, having hosted various international ski competitions that have drawn elite snow sports athletes to its high-altitude terrain. Its challenging terrain, including the black Internazionale Leonardo David piste and access to Monte Rosa glaciers, makes it ideal for high-level races. Gressoney has hosted FIS competitions, the Freeride World Tour (FWT) Challenger, and the prestigious Mezzalama Trophy - a 45km race from Cervina to Gressoney-La-Trinité, also known as the “glacier marathon”.

Away from the slopes, Gressoney offers a tranquil village vibe with deep cultural roots in the area. Once home to the Walser people, who were settled there centuries ago, the resort still features remains of their old wooden houses and stone barns scattered throughout the valley. Holidaymakers can also enjoy wholesome activities in their downtime. The aprés here is also relaxed and is more ‘winding-down’ than ‘partying-up’. Whether you’re here for the scenery, the culture, or high-altitude glacier skiing, Gressoney offers a wonderfully understated escape that feels genuinely special.

The local Gressoney area has around 34km of slopes, comprising six easy, 18 intermediate, and 10 advanced runs. The lifts here serve altitudes from around 1,200m up to 3,275m - meaning long descents and reliable snow, thanks to the mountain’s high elevation. The terrain here leans heavily towards intermediate skiers, especially on the red runs that dominate the pistes.

Snow conditions in Gressoney

With the slopes here largely quiet and uncrowded, learners have plenty of room to find their rhythm.
  • Gressoney is an intermediate's haven. There is a network of long, cruisy reds running down to Champoluc and Alagna - all featuring the stunning Monte Rosa scenery. There is a decent selection of runs here, allowing skiers to spend whole days exploring the mountain without repeating the same run.
  • Steep blacks and high-altitude routes above Gressoney-La-Trinité deliver satisfying descents for advanced skiers. The ski area’s altitude keeps the snow in great condition, so even on sunny days, the upper slopes stay crisp and rewarding.

Snowboarding in Gressoney

Snowboarding in Gressoney is a refreshing mix of big-mountain scenery, long descents and wide-open slopes, making it an excellent choice for riders who want space to play.

  • Gressoney’s naturally progressive layout makes it easy to build confidence, explore new lines and enjoy long, flowing runs. The resort's natural terrain is ideal for freeriders - the red runs above Gressoney-La-Trinité are wide and suitable for carving big, clean lines. Most of the slopes here are open and free of awkward flats, which is always a plus for snowboarders. The long descents from Punta Indren and the high alpine areas offer steep, scenic riding for more confident riders.
  • Gressoney is also known for its off-piste opportunities. The terrain between Gressoney and Alagna is renowned for big vertical drops, powder bowls and expansive off-piste lines. In the right conditions, riding feels like a proper backcountry adventure. We always advise taking a local guide on off-piste exploring.

FAQs

Are both Gressoney villages easily connected?

Yes, the two Gressoney villages — Gressoney-La-Trinité and Gressoney-Saint-Jean — are connected within the wider Monterosa Ski area, accessible via the resort's lift network. Gressoney-La-Trinité sits at the higher altitude of the two and is the primary ski base, with direct access to the main lift system. Gressoney-Saint-Jean sits lower and is connected via lifts and pistes. The Monterosa Ski area also links Gressoney with the neighbouring resorts like Champoluc, providing a well-connected ski circuit across the Aosta Valley on a single ski pass.

How snow-sure is Gressoney?

Gressoney benefits from a reasonably reliable snow record throughout the main ski season, with the Monterosa Ski area reaching up to 3,275m at the top of the Indren glacier. This high-altitude terrain provides more consistent snow coverage on the upper slopes throughout the winter. The lower-village areas can be more susceptible to variable conditions, though a robust snowmaking infrastructure supports key pistes during leaner periods. Like with most ski areas in the Alps, aiming for the higher sectors of the Monterosa maximises the likelihood of excellent snow conditions during your stay.

Are the slopes in Gressoney crowded?

Gressoney is known for its quiet, uncrowded slopes, especially on weekdays. This makes it an appealing choice for skiers who prefer a more relaxed experience with fewer lift queues. Even within the larger Monterosa ski area, it tends to feel less busy than more well-known Alpine resorts.

Is Gressoney great for families?

Yes, Gressoney is a genuinely family-friendly resort, offering a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere and a good range of terrain suited to different ability levels within the same group. Beginner and intermediate slopes are well served, and the resort has dedicated children's ski areas alongside quality ski school provision. The quieter, traditional character of both villages makes Gressoney a comfortable and enjoyable base for families with young children. Access to the wider Monterosa ski area also means more confident family members can explore progressive terrain while younger or beginner skiers develop their skills closer to the resort where they're based.

Is Gressoney a ski-in, ski-out resort?

Ski-in, ski-out access in Gressoney may vary depending on the specific property and village. Gressoney-La-Trinité offers the best proximity to the slopes and lift system, with some properties providing direct or near-direct slope access. Gressoney-Saint-Jean is lower and generally requires a short transfer to reach the main lifts. When searching for ski-in, ski-out accommodation in Gressoney, Erna Low recommends checking the location details listed for each individual property to ensure it meets your specific requirements for slope access during your stay.

Enjoy true ski-in, ski-out luxury here and direct access to the whole 305km of the vast Ski Arlberg circuit!
