Val d'Isère is largely considered as one of the most aesthetically beautiful French ski resorts. It is located in the Haute Tarentaise Valley, nestled just at the foot of the mountain range. It has a rich ski history as it has been in operation as a ski resort as far back as the early 1930’s.
Like a few of the ski resorts in France, Val d’Isere was originally just a small village in the alps with farming being its main industry at the time. The first hotel was opened in 1888 and a year later, as the story goes, a visiting French army officer gave a pair of skis (the first ever in the village) to the village parish priest; the rest was history. In 1929, a visiting Parisien named Jacques Mouflier became enamored with the village and sought to build it into a ski resort and after discussing this with the then mayor, Nicolas Bazile, the groundwork was laid and its journey began 1932.
Val d'Isere has since transformed into a modern ski resort with a great deal of its recent modernisation taking place as part of the build up to the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. In spite of its transformation, the resort still maintains its traditional village charm. The local parish church of St Bernard of Menthon, built in 1664 still stands impressively as an ode to the village's heritage and the old town is still dotted with stone and wooden chalets from years past.
Today, Val d’Isere is truly one of France's most sought after ski destinations. It has a very impressive snow record as it habitually receives heavy snow fall as a result of the Mediterian low pressures (which also falls heavy on the Italian alps) which also results in good conditions on the alps up until the end of April. Combine that with the quaint and cosy chalets and alpine styled hotels with a host of non ski activities to separately indulge in, and you have an ideal ski resort.
Val d’Isere is also a recognised Famille Plus resort and offers entertainment for all ages so children are very much catered to at the resort. Spare a moment and take a look at the brilliant Val d’Isere accommodation selections we have for you!
