The resort of
Morzine is one of our favourite French ski destinations, but if you've never visited, you might wonder what makes it so great for a ski holiday. We've put together our top five reasons we think Morzine should be on everyone's list of must-ski resorts.
The town of Morzine is one of France's most northerly ski resorts, meaning it's one of the easiest to get to from the UK. Located just 90km from Geneva Airport, you'll be at the door of your accommodation less that an hour and a half after collecting your bags. For those that prefer the flexibility of a self-drive ski holiday, the 8 hour journey from Calais is easily doable in one go, meaning there's no need to spend more on overnight stays en-route.
Morzine isn't a purpose-built ski resort, it's a year-round town and that means there are lots of facilities and amenities available, making it a great option for non-skiers. More active members of your group will love the Parc des Dérêches, a leisure centre offering a range of activities including an indoor swimming pool, ice rink and fitness or yoga classes, to name but a few.
If you're looking for
self-catering accommodation in Morzine,
L'Aiglon de Morzine offers high-quality apartments sleeping anwhere from two to nine people. All the apartments are decorated in a contemporary style with lots of light wood giving a bright and airy feel. The residence also enjoys a central location with easy access to both the Super Morzine lift and Morzine's huge choice of shops, bars and restaurants. Self-catering couldn't be easier as there is a well-stocked supermarket right across the road from the residence.
If you prefer to sit back and let someone else take care of the cooking, the 4* Hotel Le Petit Dru might be just what you're looking for. This family-run hotel offers 71 rooms, ranging from single rooms to family suites and all available on bed & breakfast or half board basis. The hotel is conveniently located, just a short walk from the resort centre and is on the free resort shuttle route for easy access to the Prodains telecabine. Facilities at the Petit Dru include an all-season outdoor heated swimming pool, wellness centre, restaurant and a comfortable lounge with table football and a pool table.
There is a great variety of restaurants, bars and clubs. Whether you're looking for a romantic drink, a quick burger or a gourmet meal, Morzine won't disappoint. Our favourite restaurant is the Chaudanne, which is just across the road from the Aiglon de Morzine. It has a great atmosphere, excellent food and service, and a lovely little wine bar downstairs. Just don't forget to book. We also like the Satellite cafe towards the old town end of Morzine for a coffee or hot chocolate and they have some great vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food options. The newly refurbished Tibetan cafe is a great place for an après drink and if you fancy some dancing there is always the legendary Cavern bar.
Of course we can't forget that your main reason for visiting Morzine is always going to be for the skiing and we're pretty sure you won't be disappointed. Part of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine gives its guests access to over 650km of pistes, taking in 6 different villages across two countries. There aren't many resorts where you can nip over to Switzerland for lunch (don't worry, we've never been asked to show our passports!). Beginners will love the gentle slopes around Avoriaz and Les Gets, intermediates will find miles of cruising blues, while more advanced skiers can challenge themselves on the steeper terrain such as the famous 'Swiss Wall', an imposing black run that acts as a gateway to the Swiss sector of the ski area.
Freestyle is also huge in the Portes du Soleil with a variety of snow parks to suit all levels, a well-maintained half-pipe and the famous 'Stash', an area of natural hits, rails and wall rides, hidden away in the trees for intrepid skiers and snowboarders to hunt out.
