Zürs Ski Holidays

The first thing you notice about Zürs is its sheer elevation and compact intimacy.

This is not a sprawling alpine town; it’s a small, high-altitude village built around a single main street. Situated in the beautiful Vorarlberg region, Zürs is arguably the most chic and exclusive of the Arlberg resorts. It has long attracted a discreet, well-heeled crowd, including European royalty and dedicated expert skiers who value quality and privacy.

The village is dominated by exquisite, typically family-run, four- and five-star luxury hotels, many of which offer genuine ski-in, ski-out access—a huge plus when you’re ready to hit the slopes. Because of this focus on high-end hotels and residences, the vibe remains calm, refined, and distinctly un-raucous.

But Zürs is not just a pretty face; it’s positioned at the epicentre of Austria’s largest interconnected ski area, Ski Arlberg. Its geographical placement provides direct, fast connections to Lech on one side and the rest of the Arlberg network (including St. Anton, St. Christoph, Warth, and Schröcken) via the innovative Flexenbahn gondola. Zürs is essentially the perfect launchpad for exploring hundreds of kilometres of linked piste and an even larger domain of incredible off-piste.

The Ski Arlberg area, as a whole, is vast, encompassing a vertical range of approximately 1,300m up to the impressive height of 2,811m. In terms of sheer scale, you’re looking at over 300km of ideally linked pistes. That’s enough mileage to keep even the most voracious intermediate skier busy for a whole week without repeating a run.

This balance means Zürs caters superbly to all levels, a point we’ll explore further. Crucially for experts and powder hounds, the official piste map is only half the story. The Arlberg boasts an additional 200km of marked, ungroomed ski routes. These are essentially controlled off-piste areas, officially marked and secured against major hazards, but left as nature intended, offering steep, bumpy, deep-snow challenges that are the real attraction for many seasoned visitors. The entire network is served by a super-modern system of 88 lifts, meaning queue times, even during peak season, are minimal.

Snow conditions in Zürs

Zürs’ high base altitude of 1,720m, combined with significant terrain facing north and north-west (like the runs from the Trittkopf summit), ensures the snow quality is reliable from early December right through to late April. When most other resorts are melting out in the spring sunshine, Zürs often retains fantastic powder stashes.

While Mother Nature does the heavy lifting, the resort still employs an extensive snowmaking system, covering around 60% of the Lech-Zürs pistes to guarantee base-to-base coverage and perfectly groomed runs, especially on the primary circuits. But let’s be honest: you come to Zürs hoping for those frequent, famous powder days, when the resort truly lives up to its reputation as a deep-snow haven.

Skiing in Zürs

The terrain here is accessible and exciting, making it a dream destination for all ability levels.

For beginners, Zürs is surprisingly welcoming despite its elite reputation. You’ll find gentle nursery slopes located right near the heart of the village, served by easy-to-use drag lifts. Once confident, the excellent Ski School Zürs guides new skiers onto the lovely, rolling blue runs, particularly those descending from the Hexenboden chairlift, which offer the perfect gradient for building speed and confidence without feeling terrifying.

Intermediates are perhaps the biggest winners here. Zürs’ central location is a huge asset, providing immediate access to sweeping, perfectly groomed red and blue cruising runs. You can log massive mileage here, but the essential intermediate experience is tackling the renowned White Ring circuit. This 22km route links Zürs, Lech, and Zug in a spectacular loop, involving around 5,500 vertical metres of descent. It's a rite of passage for any Arlberg visitor, offering beautiful scenery and a genuine sense of adventure without being overly technical. The sheer breadth of linked pistes means you can ski a different itinerary every day.

For advanced and expert skiers, Zürs is phenomenal. While the number of true black pistes might seem lower than St. Anton, the real thrill lies in the aforementioned 200km of marked, ungroomed ski routes. These itineraries, often starting from summits like the Trittkopf, are left untouched and offer steep, challenging terrain that will leave your quads burning. The most famous expert route is the Madloch trail, which starts high above Zürs and descends into Zug. While often groomed, the variations and surrounding off-piste terrain make it a superb technical challenge. For the truly adventurous, Zürs and Lech are the only places in Austria where Heli-skiing is legally permitted, offering the ultimate deep-powder experience guided by local mountain professionals.

Snowboarding in Zürs

Snowboarders will find Zürs equally appealing, though perhaps for different reasons than a purpose-built freestyle resort.

For the Freerider, Zürs is paradise. Its open, high-alpine bowls and exceptional snowfall mean deep powder is frequently accessible directly from the lift system. Rides from the Zürsersee lift or the Trittkopf, open up wide-open powder fields, perfect for surfing through fresh tracks with minimal effort. The resort layout is generally friendly, with fast lifts reducing the risk of getting stuck on long, flat traverses that can plague riders in some other European resorts.

For the Freestyle enthusiast, the main action is just a short trip away. The official Lech Snowpark is located beneath the Schlegelkopf chairlift in neighbouring Lech, easily reachable from Zürs. It offers a variety of lines and features suitable for different skill levels, rounding out the Arlberg offering nicely. However, if your primary goal is park laps, be prepared for the short commute.

What's available at Zürs ski resort?

Après-ski in Zürs

If you’re expecting the table-dancing, shot-pounding madness of St. Anton, you’ve come to the wrong place. Après-ski in Zürs is an affair of subtle sophistication and quality conversation. It’s about switching out your ski boots for slippers, moving from the slopes to a stylish bar, and enjoying an excellent glass of wine or an expertly crafted cocktail.

The scene often revolves around the high-end hotel bars, which offer a great selection of drinks and a cosy, intimate atmosphere. However, there are a few standout venues you must try:

  • Ski-Service-Verleih-Bistro is a spot that perfectly captures the Zürs combination of practicality and charm. It’s a ski service/ rental shop that cleverly transitions into a cosy bistro and sun terrace. It’s the ideal place to end your ski day, offering relaxed, post-piste drinks and a casual atmosphere.
  • KITSCH is the place for a touch of fashionable, lively energy. Often referring to a bar or lounge that balances trendy design with Austrian style, it provides a great ambience for a cocktail before dinner.
  • Tian is a nod to high-quality cuisine; finding the bar or lounge component of a venue like Tian means enjoying an exquisite pre-dinner drink in a gourmet environment.
  • For a more relaxed, rustic start to the early evening, try Brotlädele. As the name suggests, this is a small café that becomes a cosy spot for a coffee, cake, or perhaps a small Austrian Jause (snack) after the final run - a perfect chill-out spot.
The focus is on quality over volume, ensuring you’re refreshed and ready for an early start to tackle the incredible Arlberg terrain the next day.

Facilities in Zürs

Zürs might be compact, but it punches well above its weight in terms of modern amenities. The lift system is top-tier, featuring high-speed chairs and sleek gondolas, such as those found on the Trittkopfbahn and Flexenbahn, which keep you on the snow instead of stuck in queues. Ski services are equally solid, with excellent rental options and reputable shops such as Friendly Brändle ready to sort out anything from gear tweaks to complete tune-ups. Getting around is a breeze too, thanks to efficient free buses linking Zürs with Lech and the wider Arlberg area, meaning you can roam the entire region without ever touching a car.

When you’re ready for a break from skiing, the village still delivers. Winter hiking trails wind through gorgeous scenery, and there’s a scenic 4km cross-country loop near the Flexen Pass for a quiet glide. You can wrap up the day with a spin on the natural ice rink or sink blissfully into one of the exceptional hotel wellness areas - often considered among the best in Austria.

Facilities for children in Zürs

Zürs might have a polished, high-end reputation, but it’s genuinely welcoming for families, with safety and quality instruction front and centre. The Ski School Zürs is a standout, particularly with its well-loved Bockis Kinderland, catering to children aged four and up. Young skiers enjoy their own protected learning zones, structured lessons, lunch supervision, and, of course, the grand finale ski race that makes them feel like mini-pros. There’s also Kidz in Zürs, a dedicated children’s area located near the main lifts that keeps little learners out of the fast-moving traffic while still providing them with plenty of space to have fun.

For the youngest visitors, Zürs and nearby Lech offer professional childcare and crèche services through private agencies and larger hotels, making life easier for parents who want a few hours on the slopes. And when the whole crew is ready for some non-ski entertainment, the resort delivers: there’s a small toboggan hill right in Zürs, plus easy access to the long, floodlit toboggan run from Oberlech down to Lech - a guaranteed crowd-pleaser after a big day in the snow.
