Morzine is full of charm. It is a traditional Savoyard village packed full to the brim with character. Part of the extensive Portes du Soleil ski region, it is your ideal ski destination. The layout of the resort is such that you can ski straight from your accommodation doorstep. A lot of the ski accommodations Morzine has to offer are hotels and large chalet-style lodges that reflect the traditional alpine semblance.

In the Portes du Soleil, Morzine is the biggest and arguably the most beautiful village to stay in the region. Originally a rural market village, it also began to thrive from slate mining but the growth of the tour and leisure industry slowly began to transform the local economy. It became a summer attraction after the opening of the Grand Hotel by the owner Francois Baud. This was a welcome development for the area which was beginning to see a decline in its agricultural and slate mining industry. After the construction of the Pleney cable car in Morzine, skiers began to search for higher altitudes and this is where the wheel became set in motion for the area. Fast forward to the early 1960s when the Avoriaz cable card and the Nylon cable cars were constructed and the winner of the Winter Olympics, Jean Vuarnet, was made the director in charge of creating a ski resort in the area and he set about his vision of creating a traditional alpine style resort. The vision was a mix of the traditional Savoyard architecture with the natural surroundings of the Alps. The idea was also to create a resort that connected its visitors effortlessly to the pistes as well as the local amenities of shops and restaurants in an eco-friendly, decongested vehicle-free environment.

The Portes du Soleil has been successful in blending the best of both worlds, traditional and modern, contemporary and still yet renaissance. The village layout (not just the pistes) is purpose-built to suit skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels and pedestrians who are visiting for other activities. That being said, let's dive into what Morzine has to offer you; at Erna Low, we have carefully selected and put together a varied choice of accommodation.

Ski Chalets in Morzine

Jean Vuanets' vision of the accommodation in Morzine and the Portes du Soliel strayed from the idea of little chalets and instead favored a shift in ideas towards larger chalet style hotels and lodges with bigger spaces and interiors. It is not a complete shift however, as the accommodations still have some chalet inspired designs blended with modern contemporary lodging. This is evident as some of the designs of the hotels and apartment lodgings still maintain the traditional Savoyard wood and stone features that allows the village to aesthetically maintain its character, whilst still having a cosy chalet atmosphere when inside.

The chalet accommodation in Morzine is best suited for large groups and travelling families of up to 15 individuals. They have large rooms and living spaces, open balconies and may have 2 or 3 floors and at least 3 bathrooms with most being completely en suite. As is the case in most other resorts, majority of the chalets are self catering however there is the option of arranging catered ski chalets

Ski Apartments in Morzine

Ski apartments in general, are a less expensive option for smaller travelling groups. They are one of the favoured options amongst visitors at Morzine and they are available in different variations from size, stylistic design, quality and price. Apartment types range from studios to five-star graded flats however, one common denominator is the level of comfort across the board. When booking a Morzine apartment to rent, you can be rest assured that they will be cosy, comfortable and located in a convenient position close to the pistes.

Hotels in Morzine ski resort

Most of the accommodations in Morzine ( and most ski resorts in the area) are largely centered around self catering apartments and chalet styled lodges, largely due to the convenience of space especially among large travelling groups and other things like catering options and privacy or exclusive use of facilities ( gardens, balconies, spa rooms etc). However, for visitors not looking to do any self catering during their holidays and smaller groups who would prefer to leave all the hard work to the hotel services, there is a good selection of hotels to choose from in Morzine.
