Selva Ski Holidays
As the highest village in Val Gardena, it sits in the shadow of the dramatic Sella Massif, a natural fortress of jagged limestone peaks that form the backdrop to the legendary Sellaronda. This iconic 40km circuit lets skiers loop around the massif, crossing through four valleys and three provinces in a single, unforgettable day on the slopes. The resort's prime location means you can step straight into this skiing adventure.
Despite being a key hub for the vast Dolomiti Superski area (with its 1,200km of interconnected pistes), Selva has retained its authentic Ladin character. The centre buzzes with traditional mountain culture and modern comforts - think family-run rifugios serving speck dumplings alongside contemporary wine bars pouring local Lagrein. Everywhere you look, the UNESCO-protected peaks frame the scene, their pale cliffs glowing pink at sunset in the famous Enrosadira phenomenon. This perfect balance of convenience and awe-inspiring nature makes Selva so special.
What truly sets Selva apart is its role as the Dolomites' ultimate ski crossroads. From here, you can access not just the Sellaronda but also the hidden valleys of Ciampinoi, the sweeping cruising runs of Plan de Gralba, and the challenging World Cup downhill run on the Saslong. Whether you're a piste perfectionist, a freeride explorer, or someone who just wants to ski between strudel stops, Selva puts the very best of the Dolomites right at your ski tips, all while wrapping you in that warm South Tyrolean hospitality that keeps visitors returning year after year.

I can trace my love of kaiserschmarrn back to a visit to Selva and skiing the Sellaronda, epic skiing and great food!

Mountain facts
Selva is the main gateway to the Val Gardena ski area, a superb domain in its own right that boasts a total of 175km of pistes and over 80 lifts. The local skiing is impressive, with a vertical drop from the highest point at 2,450m down to the village at 1,570m. The resort's lifts are incredibly efficient, with modern gondolas and chairlifts ensuring that queues are a rarity.
Selva’s true appeal, though, lies in its access to the wider Dolomiti Superski area, which provides a staggering 1,220km of pistes across 12 different valleys, all on a single lift pass. This includes the iconic Sellaronda, a ski carousel that can be completed in a day, starting and ending right from Selva's doorstep.
Snow conditions in Selva
Selva enjoys a reputation for excellent snow reliability, a feature shared with much of the Dolomiti Superski area. Its high elevation and the extensive use of snowmaking, with over 90% of the slopes covered by an advanced system, ensure a consistent snow base throughout the season. The resort is also known for its meticulous slope grooming, with a large fleet of piste bashers working overnight to prepare the runs for the next day, guaranteeing perfectly groomed corduroy every morning. This combination of natural and artificial snow allows for a long and enjoyable season from early December to mid-April.
Skiing in Selva
Selva's skiing caters to a wide range of abilities, but it is particularly well-suited to intermediates and experts. The local area has a challenging mix of red and black runs, including the world-famous Saslong World Cup downhill course. This run is a must-do for advanced skiers, with its steep pitches and long, fast stretches. For intermediates, the options are endless, with a vast network of perfectly groomed red runs that link up to the entire Sellaronda circuit.
For beginners, the resort has several dedicated learning areas, especially around the Plan de Gralba area. The local ski schools are excellent and will help you build confidence on the gentle nursery slopes before you venture out onto the wider area. The sheer size of the overall Dolomiti Superski area means that even a two-week holiday won't be enough to ski all the different runs.
