Best seasonal skiing in Austria
Generally speaking, the Austrian ski season kicks off in late November or early December and often runs well into April, sometimes even May in the glacier resorts, giving you a good, long window to plan your trip.
If you’re itching to get on the snow early, the higher resorts and glacier areas often boast excellent early snow conditions in November and December. Places like Sölden with its Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers, and the Stubai Glacier near Innsbruck, are popular choices for getting those first exhilarating turns in. Plus, you might find the slopes a little quieter before the main Christmas rush.
Mid-season, from January to February, is typically when you’ll find the most reliable and widespread snow conditions across most Austrian resorts, with fully open terrain and often picture-perfect winter landscapes. It’s peak season, so expect a lively atmosphere on the slopes and in the resorts.
And the skiing doesn’t end in winter! March and April make for lovely spring skiing in Austria, and often come with warmer, sunnier days that make for enjoyable conditions. Some higher-altitude resorts, like Obertauern or those with glacier access, still offer excellent snow cover well into spring, and you might even snag a good deal and enjoy fewer crowds.
Austrian après-ski
Austria and après-ski are practically synonymous! After an exhilarating day carving down the slopes, you’ll find a famously lively and often quite unique social scene.
From traditional, rustic mountain huts (called Skihütten) dotted across the mountainside, where you can warm up with a Jägertee or a hearty plate of Kasnocken (Austrian cheese noodles), to buzzing bars and clubs in the resort centres with live music, DJs, and dancing that often starts while you’re still in your ski boots, there’s an après-ski experience to suit every taste.
Expect a friendly and convivial vibe, where swapping stories of your epic runs (or perhaps your spectacular tumbles!) over a Glühwein (mulled wine) or a local beer is all part of the fun, and the sound of clinking steins and accordion music spills out onto snowy streets. Some resorts, like Ischgl and Sölden, are particularly well-known for their energetic nightlife, so prepare for long nights that end in the wee hours of the morning.
