Montgenevre Ski Holidays
As the only French resort that forms part of the Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area, Montgenèvre is linked to over 400km of slopes across the border in Italy. The local ski area covers around 110km of pistes, with wide, forgiving runs perfect for beginners and intermediates, plus some more technical sections higher up for when you’re ready to push yourself. The snow record here is solid, the lifts are modern, and the variety of terrain means you’ll never feel stuck skiing the same run twice.
After a few days on the hill, you’ll find Montgenèvre has a lovely, laid-back vibe off the slopes too. It’s not about wild après here - it’s more about good food, sunny terraces, and local bars where the atmosphere feels genuinely friendly. For families, it’s one of the best choices in the Alps: compact, easy to get around, and with excellent ski schools. For regulars, it’s all about that mix of French charm and Italian warmth that makes every trip feel like a proper mountain escape. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, Montgenèvre never seems to lose its easy-going appeal.
One of my favourite places, sunny slopes, gentle runs and a delicious lunch in Italy

Mountain facts
The local area is split between two main sectors - Chalvet and Les Gondrans, both easily accessible from the village and well linked by modern lifts. The slopes within the immediate Montgenèvre area cover approximately 110km of pistes, spread across a mix of open bowls and tree-lined runs that suit every level. Montgenèvre is also connected to the Milky Way ski area, extending slope access to over 400km of pistes across Italy and France, including Sestriere and Sauze d’Oulx. With sunny slopes, wide runs, and a relaxed atmosphere, Montgenèvre is a fantastic choice for those wanting a laid-back ski holiday with plenty of terrain to discover.
Snow conditions in Montgenevre
At a resort height of 1,860m and slopes reaching up to 2700m, Montgenèvre benefits from its high-altitude and north-facing slopes, which are a big help in preserving snow quality well into spring. Regular snowfall from both French and Italian weather systems provides Montgenèvre with an impressive snow cover for most of the season. The resort also has an extensive snow-making facility that supplements the main runs during milder weather spells. The upper slopes around Les Gondrans often hold the best snow, while lower areas are great for cruisy runs in softer afternoon conditions. With plenty of wide, open pistes and sunny days, Montgenèvre offers a perfect balance of dependable snow and enjoyable skiing - ideal for all abilities looking for a worry-free winter holiday.
Skiing in Montgenevre
There’s a lot of excitement on Montgenèvre’s slopes for everyone - from absolute newbies to seasoned powder hounds. While beginners and intermediates have a few more options on the slopes, there’s still a good selection of challenging runs to keep advanced skiers occupied. Montgenèvre’s connection to the Milky Way also offers 400km of pistes stretching across France and Italy, so you’ll be spoiled for variety.
- Montgenèvre is a beginner's haven. Its wide, gentle greens in Les Gondrans present the perfect learning platform on quiet, perfectly groomed slopes, giving newbies plenty of space to build confidence. The nursery slopes and ski schools are also right next to the village, making the first days on skis relaxed and convenient.
 - Intermediates will find the most to love here. The red and blue runs rolling down both sides of the valley offer long, varied descents with great snow and stunning views. The Chalvet area, in particular, is brilliant for cruising - fast, smooth pistes with just enough challenge to keep things exciting.
 - For advanced skiers, there’s more than enough to get your adrenaline going. Steep blacks like Les Rhodos present a spirited test, and the off-piste terrain beyond the main lifts offers some incredible powder stashes, especially after fresh snowfall. For some real adventure, we’ll recommend taking a guide if you fancy exploring off-piste slopes across the Italian border.

Snowboarding in Montgenevre
Montgenèvre is a brilliant resort for snowboarders. It offers a great mix of terrain, reliable snow, and a laid-back vibe that suits riders of all levels.
- Freestylers can head to the Montgenèvre Snowpark, located above Les Gondrans. It includes kickers, rails, and boxes suited to different ability levels. There’s also a fun boardercross course for those who like a bit of friendly competition.
 - The wide, gentle runs around the Les Gondrans sector are perfect for newbies looking to build confidence. The pistes are spacious and forgiving, with smooth gradients ideal for learning turns or practising carves. The resort’s efficient lift system also means minimal time unstrapping, which every snowboarder can appreciate.
 - Intermediate riders will love Montgenèvre’s long reds and blues that link across both sides of the valley. The Chalvet area, in particular, offers wide, cruisy slopes with often excellent snow conditions - perfect for working on technique or enjoying big, sweeping runs.
 - When fresh snow falls, there’s plenty of off-piste terrain to explore. The powder fields between the trees and the open bowls above the resort are fantastic, especially with a guide. And if you’re looking for more, the connection to the Milky Way ski area opens up hundreds of kilometres of extra terrain across France and Italy.
