Morillon Ski Holidays

Unlike some of the glitzier resorts nearby, Morillon retains its rustic soul - all wooden chalets, snow-dusted pines, and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that feels wonderfully authentic.

The resort is split into two main areas. Down in the valley sits Morillon Village (680m), a charming, year-round settlement where you’ll find the church, bakery, and traditional Savoyard life ticking along in harmony with the ski season. A quick hop up by gondola takes you to Morillon 1100 Les Esserts (1,100m), a purpose-built but tasteful ski-in, ski-out satellite village. It’s completely pedestrianised, which makes it blissfully calm - and perfect if you’re travelling with kids who have a habit of disappearing on snowboards or sledges.

Morillon proudly carries the Famille Plus label, which is France’s official stamp of approval for resorts that go above and beyond for families. From childcare and ski schools to safe play areas, everything here is designed with young skiers (and their parents) in mind.

But don’t mistake ‘family-friendly’ for ‘small’ - Morillon is part of the mighty Grand Massif Domain, one of the largest interconnected ski areas in France. That’s 265km of pistes linking Morillon, Samoëns, Les Carroz, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, and Flaine, offering a staggering variety of terrain.

The Grand Massif offers substantial skiing with its highest point at a lofty 2,500m and an impressive 1,800m vertical drop down to its lowest base at 680m (Morillon). The entire domain features 265 km of pistes, including approximately 55 km in the local Morillon/Les Esserts sector, all efficiently serviced by over 75 lifts - a slick mix of gondolas and high-speed chairs - to minimise queuing. The run distribution heavily favours intermediates with 50 blue runs and 19 red runs, while also catering well to beginners with 17 green runs and experts with 10 black runs. Plus, those who prefer a different pace can explore the extensive network of Nordic trails in the Giffre Valley, particularly around Lac Bleu, for tranquil cross-country skiing through snow-dusted forests.

Snow conditions in Morillon

One of Morillon’s biggest assets is its reliability. Thanks to its north-facing slopes and proximity to the Mont Blanc Massif, the resort benefits from regular snowfall and excellent snow preservation throughout the season.

The Les Esserts slopes, being mainly north-facing, hold onto their snow longer than many neighbouring resorts, while the tree-lined pistes offer excellent visibility even when the weather’s playing up. And should the snow gods go on holiday, don’t worry - the Grand Massif’s high-altitude hub in Flaine guarantees access to top-quality snow at 2,500m.

Skiing in Morillon

Morillon's charm is rooted in its excellent balance, making it a laid-back, scenic, and ideal destination for families, beginners, and intermediates, while still offering access to challenging terrain nearby. The local runs are notably long, tree-lined, and forgiving, encouraging a relaxed style of skiing that allows you to truly appreciate the views. The resort is exceptional for beginners, largely thanks to the Plateau des Esserts at Morillon 1100, which is celebrated as one of the best nursery zones in the Alps - it is spacious, sunny, traffic-free, and perfect for building confidence. A highlight is The Marvel, a 5km green run that dreamily winds through the forest, known for its gentle gradients and beautiful scenery, which inspires a genuine love for the sport.

For intermediates, Morillon is a happy place defined by pure Alpine bliss, offering ample opportunity for cruising blues and playful reds on its tree-lined local runs. A Grand Massif lift pass further unlocks hundreds of kilometres of linked slopes across Samoëns and Les Carroz, allowing for days of non-repetitive exploration. While Morillon's immediate terrain is mellow, advanced and expert skiers are well catered for via the Grand Massif connection; heading towards Flaine grants access to serious challenges, including the demanding Diamant Noir black run, thrilling off-piste bowls, and high-altitude descents that effectively satisfy any adrenaline craving.

Snowboarding in Morillon

Snowboarders will find plenty to smile about here. The Grand Massif’s modern lift system (goodbye, endless button lifts) and broad pistes make Morillon an excellent base for both beginners and intermediates learning to carve.

If freestyle is your thing, the Jampark in Flaine is the go-to spot for rails, jumps, and boxes, while the larger domain offers several boardercross courses for a bit of friendly competition.

Freeriders, meanwhile, can make for the open bowls above Flaine, where you’ll find some of the best powder stashes in the area - especially after a fresh dump. Just remember: always go with a guide if you’re heading off-piste.

What's available at Morillon ski resort?

Après-ski in Morillon

If your idea of après-ski involves spraying champagne on a dancefloor, you’re in the wrong place. Morillon’s après scene is relaxed, friendly, and food-focused, which suits the resort’s easy-going personality perfectly.

At Le Potet 2.0, you can ski straight off the slopes and tuck into pizza and beers with locals - sometimes accompanied by live music. It’s lively without being chaotic, and a great first stop after your last run. Back in the village, La Puzze is a firm favourite for families and groups, offering everything from hearty Savoyard classics (yes, that means fondue) to wood-fired pizzas. For something more refined, head to Arvi’Pâtes in nearby Verchaix - a restaurant dedicated to fresh, handmade pasta and locally sourced ingredients. It’s not your typical mountain fare, and that’s precisely what makes it worth the trip. And for those who appreciate a good pint, Brasserie de la Vallée du Giffre - an artisanal mountain brewery - is the spot to sample craft beers made right here in the Alps.
