However, fast forward to the early 20th century and tourism in Samoens was fully in motion with the development of a number of hotels. Historically known to be stonemasons and stone cutters as far back as the 17th century, some of the buildings in the resort till this day are still heavily influenced by stone.

Samoens is known to be the only ski resort that is within a recognised national heritage site. A lovely picturesque village especially in the winter, Samoens is full of charm and character. Out of all the ski accommodation options available, chalets are arguably the most charismatic and most favourable option for visitors who are in search of a quintessential ski holiday experience. The experience for some is never complete without being within the thick stone walls and underneath the large wood beams (most likely from the Savoie woodlands) of a chalet. They have just that little bit more appeal with their character and especially in a lovely village like Samoens, they elicit an almost pictorial chocolate-box look.

Chalets are the perfect option for large travelling groups of family or group of friends who want to have privacy and flexibility on their stay. They are usually self-catered and the privacy of the chalets can often give off the home away from home feeling that guests often find relaxing.

The Mazot Chalet, Samoens

The Mazot is a very charismatic chalet in Samoens. It is located only 300 meters away from the resort center and within walking distance of the various amenities the village has to offer. Built just next to the large Chalet Moccand chalet style apartments, the Mazot is a self-contained building on its own. It has 2 bedrooms and can sleep up to 5 guests. Both rooms are en suite with one a twin double and a large walk in shower and WC. Both bedrooms are impressively finished with wood beam ceilings and wood finishes on parts of the wall and furniture, filling the room with alpine character. full of alpine character; design overhead and wooden floors. There is an open plan living space which consists of the living room, dining and kitchen area. This is a large space brightly lit by windows at different corners of the room which also allows for great views of the village and mountain terrain. The living room area has a flat screen satellite TV, wifi, music system, dvd player and other board games to entertain guests. There is also a large and comfortable sofa sitting next to a rustic woodburner. The kitchen is fully equipped with a double oven, fridge freezer, and a dishwasher. There is also a terrace with an additional dining set for outdoor dining. This is a self catered chalet, although catering service may also be provided on request.

The Mazot chalet also has a small sauna for 2, large utility and storage room which also includes a laundry.

Renting a holiday apartment for the ski trip in Samoens would probably be one the most sensible options amongst smaller traveling groups of family or friends. Apartments are a great option because they are also self catering and also have privacy and dedicated space but most importantly they are budget friendly. They offer a very similar flexibility to chalets with the only difference being size however, there are a lot of chalet style apart-hotels that still allow guests to enjoy the rustic feeling of a chalet within a rented apartment. This is usually achieved from the style, decor and additional facilities like fireplaces and hot tubs.

Les Chalets de Laÿssia

Located right in the center of the beautiful Samoens, Les Chalets de Laÿssia, is an amazing 4 star luxury property that has apartments and hotel lets for visiting guests to Samoens. Its location is perfect as it is within proximity of all the local amenities of bars, restaurants, lounges and ski schools. Additionally, the grand massif gondola is a shuttle bus away and there is a bus stop just a few meters away from the residence; with one every 10-15 minute interval.

There are 55 luxurious chalet style apartments all finished to a high standard and in an elegant mix of the traditional savoyard character and contemporary interior design featuring very chic interior furniture. Each apartment has a bright living room area with 2 large sliding doors which open up to a balcony and breathtaking views (which can also be enjoyed from within the apartment). There is a dining room and kitchen area in the living space fully equipped with a 4 ring ceramic cooking hob, dishwasher, Nespresso machine, fridge, toaster and other utensils and appliances needed for self catering. Depending on the apartment's size, the bedrooms can sleep any number between 2 and up to 10 guests. Bedrooms are double and could come with twin or double beds. All apartments have Flat screen satellite TV and wifi access.

Furthermore the additional facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool and a separate children ( families with young children can all enjoy a dip in the pool to unwind at the same time), a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. There is also access to the Spa O des Cimes for residents as well which offers a good number of massages and beauty treatments separately.

As is the case in most apartments, private chefs and catering services can be arranged if guests would prefer not to do any cooking during their stay. Additional services include, ski equipment storage room with ski rack and shoe warmers, luggage rooms, onsite underground car park and end of stay cleaning.

Les Chalets de Laÿssia is the ideal Samoens ski holiday retreat for a smaller travelling group of friends and young families who still wish to enjoy the luxury of chalet accommodation but still have the flexibility of a smaller sized apartment and other variations based on the travel size and budget.

La Reine des Pres

Reine des Prés apartments is a splendid ski holiday apartment rental building in the lovely Samoens. It is conveniently located just in between the Grand Massif Express ( which connects the village to the ski area) and the village center. This is perfect because all the village and resort amenities are within a short walk from the apartment. Reine des Pres has a spacious welcoming lounge with a fireplace where guests can relax with a warm drink. It has a total of 79 rooms and sleeps any amount from 2 and up to 10 guests per apartment. Each apartment can have anything from 2 rooms to 4 rooms (with twin or double beds on request), with each bedroom en suite with a bath and shower head attachment including WC. The bedrooms are snug and cosy and finished to an impressive standard. There is an excellent lightwood finish throughout the apartment which gives it an extra deluxe appearance. The kitchen comes fully equipped with cooking hobs, fridge, oven, microwave dishwasher, coffee machine and other kitchen facilities and utensils for self catering. There is an optional breakfast bakery service at Reine de Pres apartments. As is the norm at most self catering ski apartment rentals, private chefs and catering services can be arranged on request.

There is a large open plan living room space with large doors to the balcony for amazing views of the mountain range. The living room spaces all have flat screen satellite TV, wifi access and a sofa bed. For families with babies or toddlers, baby cots and chairs can be requested for the apartment.

Leisure areas are a treat at Reine des Prés apartments. There is a spa and wellness center that is accessible to guests. These include sauna and steam rooms, whirlpool jacuzzi and indoor heated swimming pool. What better way to relax after the daily excursions on the pistes? There is also a games area with a pool table, a gym and fitness space. Massages and spa treatments are available to book separately.

Additional services include parking, luggage storage,ski equipment storage and heated boot warmers, laundry services, games room and play area for young children.

There is a good selection of hotels to choose from at Samoens. Hotel accomodation at Samoens is ideal for guests who are visiting for short stays. Chalets and apartments are usually let on at least a 6 day stay so visitors planning a weekend getaway or 3 to 4 days during the half term would find hotels to be ideal. Less crowded than the other resorts on the grand massif Samoens is widely known to be family friendly and majority of the hotels here cater to families with young children as well. It is located less than a 10 minute walk from the Samoens ski resort center and 12 minutes walk from the Grand Massif Express gondola. Hotel Alexane offers an indulgent luxury stay for its guests. The interior is exquisitely finished to the very high standards. Each of its 33 rooms come in different suite variations and each with its own lounge area or living room, balcony, minibar, safe, flat screen satellite TV and unlimited wifi access. They can sleep travelling couples and even have family suites to cater to young families with small children. The furniture is lush and stylishly put together. The rooms feature different types of wood finishes from wood beam ceilings to polished wood floors. The living rooms have large sliding doors which open up to balconies and some of the best views of the mountain range.
