Valmorel Ski Lessons
Valmorel has long had a reputation as one of the best family ski resorts in France - it was even named the world's best family ski resort at the World Snow Awards in 2014 - and the standard of ski instruction available here plays a big part in that.
The resort's ski school, École du Ski Français (ESF), has been a fixture in the village for decades and offers a comprehensive range of lessons for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities.
ESF in Valmorel operates from the Hameau du Mottet, the heart of the resort's beginner and learning area, and has a team of around 150 qualified instructors. Lessons are available in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, which makes it a genuinely accessible school for international visitors. Whether it's a nervous first-timer needing to build confidence from scratch, a child progressing through ESF's structured award system, or an experienced skier looking to refine their technique on Valmorel's more demanding terrain, ESF caters to the full spectrum.
Group lessons run six days a week during the ski season (from December through to April), typically in 2.5-hour sessions in either the morning or afternoon. They're a sociable and cost-effective way to improve, and the structured progression - working through a series of awards from Flocon through to the higher-level stars - gives children in particular a clear sense of achievement. For those who prefer a more tailored experience, private lessons are available for 1 to 3 participants at similar levels and can be delivered in a wide range of languages. ESF also offers off-piste and freeride instruction for more adventurous skiers, as well as snowboard tuition.
FAQs
At what age can children start ski lessons with the ESF in Valmorel?
The ESF Valmorel runs the Club Piou-Piou programme for children aged 3+, providing a fun and gentle introduction to skiing in a secure, purpose-designed snow garden. From the age of four or five, children can typically progress into the main children's group lesson structure, working through the ESF's award scheme - Flocon - and then the star grades - at their own pace. Group lessons for children aged 6–12 are available in morning, lunchtime and afternoon sessions, with multiple meeting points across the resort depending on ability level.
What is the difference between group and private lessons at the ESF in Valmorel?
Group lessons are the most popular option and are well-suited to most learners. Classes are grouped by ability level, allowing everyone to progress together at a similar pace. They're also a more affordable option than private tuition. Private lessons, on the other hand, offer one-on-one (or small group) instruction with a dedicated ESF instructor, fully tailored to your specific goals - whether that's conquering a fear, improving a particular technique, or venturing off-piste for the first time. Private lessons accommodate up to three participants, provided they're at a similar level.
Can the ESF teach both snowboarding and skiing in Valmorel?
Yes. ESF Valmorel offers snowboard instruction alongside ski lessons, for both adults and children. Private snowboard lessons are available, and group snowboard lessons may also be offered depending on demand during your stay. If snowboarding is your priority, it's worth contacting us advance to confirm availability and book your preferred format. Carré Neige insurance is recommended for both snowboarders and skiers.
