Accommodation in Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes sits in the Isère region of the French Alps and has built a well-deserved reputation as one of the most snow-sure resorts in Europe.

Perched at high altitude with access to one of the continent's largest skiable glaciers - reaching 3,600m at its highest point - the resort offers a remarkable 220km of pisted runs and a vertical drop of roughly 2.3km from top to bottom. These are serious skiing statistics, and they help explain why the resort attracts everyone from first-timers looking for guaranteed snow to seasoned powder-chasers seeking a genuine challenge.

What makes Les Deux Alpes genuinely unusual is its so-called 'upside-down' layout. The glacier at the top of the mountain is home to the resort's gentler, more beginner-friendly terrain, whilst the steeper, more technical pistes run down towards the town itself. It's a quirky inversion of the typical alpine setup, giving the mountain a character all its own.

Down at resort level, Les Deux Alpes stretches for roughly 2km - a long, lively ribbon of a town packed with bars, restaurants, and shops. The après-ski scene here is legendary, the dining options are genuinely varied, and the energy tends to skew young and sociable. It's the kind of place where the fun doesn't stop when the lifts do.

Choosing your Les Deux Alpes ski accommodation

Given the resort's elongated layout, where you stay in Les Deux Alpes makes a real difference to your holiday experience. The town divides loosely into a handful of distinct sectors, each with its own character and practical advantages.

The centre is the heartbeat of the resort, and staying here puts you within easy walking distance of the main Jandri Express gondola as well as the busiest bars and restaurants. If you want to be at the centre of everything - on and off the mountain - this is the place to base yourself. Les Deux Alpes 1800 is a quieter satellite area, slightly higher up, and it's particularly well regarded for its ski-in, ski-out convenience, making it a strong choice for families or anyone who'd rather not faff around with shuttle buses at the start or end of the day.

At the northern entrance to the resort, on the Mont de Lans side, you'll tend to find more budget-friendly options alongside several larger apartment complexes - good news if you're travelling in a group and keeping an eye on costs. Meanwhile, the southern end of town around Place de Venosc has a slightly more traditional Alpine feel and offers quick access to the Diable chairlift, which is ideal if you're planning to ski that side of the mountain regularly.

As a general rule, staying within around 300m of either the Jandri or Diable lift hubs will mean you can walk to the slopes without needing to rely on the resort shuttle. That said, the free bus does run the full length of the resort throughout the day, so even properties further afield are perfectly manageable. Beyond lift proximity, it's also worth thinking about what else you'd like to be close to - the outdoor pool, the ice rink, or particular restaurant areas - as these can all influence where your ideal base might be.

Ski Apartments in Les Deux Alpes

Apartments are by far the most popular form of accommodation in Les Deux Alpes, and it's easy to see why. They offer a level of flexibility that suits groups and families particularly well - you set your own schedule, you eat when you want, and you're not beholden to hotel dinner sittings or buffet queues.

One of the real pleasures of self-catering in France is the quality of the local food shopping. Les Deux Alpes has good supermarkets as well as traiteurs - essentially delicatessen-style shops - where you can pick up beautifully prepared dishes, charcuterie, cheese, and more. It makes self-catering feel genuinely enjoyable rather than a compromise.

Ski Chalets in Les Deux Alpes

Chalets in Les Deux Alpes tend to look a little different from the classic wooden alpine architecture you might associate with resorts like Méribel or Val d'Isère. Here, the style is often a blend of modern stone and timber - functional, solid, and well-suited to the resort's contemporary character.

Renting a whole chalet gives a group complete privacy and independence. You have the run of the property - living areas, kitchen, terrace - and there's no need to share spaces with strangers. It's a format that works brilliantly for larger families or groups of friends who want to cook together, socialise in their own space, and really settle in for the week.

Practical ski-specific features are a strong point too. Expect private ski lockers and boot warmers as standard in most properties, so your kit is dry and ready to go each morning. Many chalets also benefit from south-facing terraces with views across to the Muzelle mountain - a lovely spot for a vin chaud in the afternoon sun. Capacity tends to be generous, with many chalets sleeping between ten and fifteen guests across multiple bedrooms.

Ski Hotels in Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes has a solid range of hotels, from no-nonsense 2-star options that serve perfectly well as a base camp for keen skiers, through to refined 4-star boutique properties with a more polished level of service. Hotels are particularly well suited to shorter stays, or to guests who prefer to hand over the cooking entirely and focus on making the most of their time on the slopes.

Half-board is widely available - breakfast and dinner included - which takes the pressure off planning evening meals and can actually represent good value, especially if you're only in resort for a few nights. Many of Les Deux Alpes' hotels have been operated by the same families for decades, and that heritage shows in the personal, attentive service you tend to receive. It's the kind of place where the owner might well be behind the bar.
